Skittles - scarlet macaw
Skittles really seems to enjoy being out on hikes, so today we hiked up North Mountain. Gave her a chance to she what it was like if she could fly.

About 3/4's the way up, we saw a rescue helicopter flying to the top of the mountain. My wife and I were breathing hard by this point, so I turned to her and said "Did you call ahead for that!" :D

Fortunately, no one was injured, just some training exercises.

Great photos, and that is awesome that Skittles gets to go on hiking excursions! Lucky bird!

Out of curiosity, were you not concerned Skittles might startle and take a leap off the cliff? Or is there not as much elevation here as the pics make it seem? Not judging here, just curious. When our Piper startles he does not exactly think out his options.

Hey LB,

Thanks for the nice comments and for your concern. Skittles has atrophy in one wing and can't fly. My big concern at home is her fallen off her perch and hitting the ground too hard. When she is outside, she holds onto my index and middle fingers and I rap my thumb over her feet. Also, all of the hikes we have gone on were where there was no big drop offs from the trails.

Today was different and it did give me some concern. If I continue doing those kind of trials, I will probably get a harness just to be safe.

I see! Thanks for sharing those awesome pics. Not all birds get to experience the world like that.
