Well I finally decided to stick the harness on Onyx. I have yet to see her be actually fearful of many objects and after a few training sessions getting her to stick her head through the harness for bits of pecan I just put it on her. After a bit of a struggle getting it adjusted and tight enough (it did end up a little twisted in the belly strap somehow, but the security wasn't compromised so we went outside rather than fussing)

The first thing she did was stare up at the sky and wolf whistle, I started by walking around the yard and gauging her comfort level. I let her sit on the dogwood and chew a leaf or two while keeping the little pecan pieces coming.

So I got my bicycle. She was unfazed, so I put her on my shoulder and took a few test turns around the driveway. Then I looped the flight line around my neck to shorten it in case she took a dive and we hit the open road for a quick bike over to the neighborhood walking trail. She did great the entire time but I do need to remember to put an earplug in the corresponding ear because she whistles loudly almost the whole time, LOL.

Then I stopped at a field and let her hop around on the grass and follow me down the sidewalk, she even tried flying a little (I have not clipped her). I hope to do some flight training with her of I can get her to fly to me. We even attracted a passerby and talked for a bit. The lady was also a bird lover and played with the idea of petting onyx but I told her that she was about 75% likely to give her a nasty bite lol, so she wisely refrained.

All in all it went great-- there was a bit of a struggle getting the harness off but as soon as it was she just floofed her feathers and enjoyed more pecan pieces and a bath and did not want to go back into her cage! Once she was she preened and ate and settled in for a good self-face petting session.

I would have got pics but my iPod died right at the start of our excursion so maybe tomorrow :3 hopefully the weather is nice.

Edited to add that I guess I did take one picture! This was about 2 mins after we first went outside.

I love that! I would have never thought of riding a bike with the harness, but that's a great idea! I am getting a baby rosie used to the harness right now. We also have a bit of a problem when taking it off. I watched the dvd that came with it, we didn't do all the "pre-harness training" We just kind of started putting it on him. I keep the little sunflower seeds coming all the way through putting it on and taking it off!

wow, the bike ride worked out??? go figure. i have wanted to take gilbert but i thought the 'wind' would upset him and i didn't want to risk him getting freaked out while i'm riding down the road. I tried it with my dog years ago and he was absolutely terrified so i never did it again.

Nice job! I am glad she enjoyed it and the bike ride, too! Keep up the great job!

Yeah it was great! Try riding a few circles around your driveway and standing near the road as cars pass before hitting the open road yourself--- I also recommend looping the line around your neck or wrist so that if your bird decides to take a dive of any sort there is no way that he wool be able to get mixed up in the pedals/wheels/gears and that there is no way your line will start winding itself around your pedals or wheels.

I'm really disappointed that its been raining and pouring all day long. I guess my planned day at the park with onyx will not be happening today :( maybe tomorrow after work.

Nope, she was very relaxed. I don't see how her perching translates to a death grip (I work at a bird store so I understand death grips lol). The only thing she was doing was turning to look at the flowers.

She is a very "go with the flow" bird and I can place her down on nearly any surface without upsetting or stressing her :)

That is just awesome! I've never thought of taking Eliza or Henry out on a bike ride, but I may just give it some thought. Sounds like it was a blast!

Some pics taken the same evening as the video. :3. She really likes it on the trees, she starts rubbing herself all over the branches.

Great video and photos! Now you've got me convinced to try this with Eliza--I think she'd really enjoy it!

I want to see pics and videos if/when you do! It is so much fun- silly caiques think they should be walked like a dog...

LOL! I think that's because if you were to tell a caique that it's a bird, the response would be "A what?!"
