Fire alarm sound?

Merlin already scared the heck out of me tonight. She made a sound exactly like the loud, high pitched beep of a smoke alarm. I went running all over the house checking the alarms, each room and the basement. Then I heard it again and realized it came out of her (thankfully!). Is that a normal sound for a Grey or an imitation she learned? Boy, that will be a hard one to ignore just in case it's the real thing, lol!

That's funny, Billie does the smoke detector too. He will randomly just start yelling Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! lol. It would probably be cuter if he didn't do it so often though. He must have either known it from his old home or got it off of tv. I've been wanting to teach him the cue, "Billie, do you smell smoke?". He also does this trilling alarm sound from a video game and we call it his zombie alarm. That one is actually kind of painful and unless I'm in a particularly good mood it drives me crazy!

I admit, she got me! I wonder if she was pleased with herself for making mommy run around like a maniac freaking out, lol!

She just did a loud cluck and my amazon jumped off his perch. We will all have to get used to the new sounds, and she likewise will have to get used to ours.

Haha that's funny.Pearl learned an alarm and we know it's her because I doubt we will find a police car in our living room:)

I have to tell you, it was spot on! I thought it was the one in the front room, where the birds are. I darn near started grabbing cages to push them out of the house.

I'm glad Pearl learned a police car not a fire alarm!I would've been frantic.

Oh my goodness, I was frantic! It's been years I think since I've been that freaked out. Can you just imagine, too, having a house fire the first night you have a new bird? It's much warmer outside than it normally is this time of year, but it is still January!

On the first night that would've been a living nightmare!

I just now got one that sounded like a machine gun. I'll have to figure that one out as I doubt her previous owners were shooting off machine guns, lol! They definitely aren't the sort!

Oh, what noises do WE have to look forward to, when her "South American friends" arrive here?

We met a timneh a few months ago who did a GREAT fire engine (among other things) & our Grey does the telephone very accurately, although softly (it isn't in the same room with him, so he does the 'muffled version').

Welcome to the world of Greys!

Guess I'm lucky Marty does no loud noises at all the loudest thing he does is the microwave. Buddy only has one and he only does it about once a week when hes really excited.. He hangs upside down from her cage swinging and lets out a blood curdling scream as if someone has cut his foot off the first time I came running in a panic now I just smile knowing he's having a grand old time.

This apt. where I am living has the loudest fire alarm is the world. I cannot stand it and ears really hurt. It goes right through your body. Rosie has mimicked it for about a year now. When she makes this sound she is in a situation where she is not comfortable - it is her personal alarm now. She usually does this sound when I walk her around the building.

They did send me a list of her common words and sounds. But, in the panic of the moment I forgot she did a fire alarm, lol! This morning have been clucks, coos and a "bap, bap, bap". She hasn't spoken yet, but she definitely likes when I talk to her a lot. Oh, and when I took her out of the carrier, she kissed me:) I've gotten a few more kisses and she has asked for plenty of head scritches.

I am amazed that a grey is making this noise and so accurate that you didn’t able to recognize and got stumbled in it. There could be any possibility that grey has heard fire alarm noise somewhere and catches the exact voice in the same pitch and density. So, it’s normal.

BUT whenever the alarm goes off, you have to check each and every time

Mishka imitates my cell phone messages alert, to perfection, want to know how many times I check it throughout the day

This thread is hilarious! The nursery my MIL uses for her plants has an African grey. They say when they visited the bird started doing a fire alarm. The bird's mum told the bird to make nice noises or she'd shut the door (so the bird couldn't see outside) and the bird started doing nicer beeps instead.

Maybe Mishka is texting without you knowing?! :mp:

OMG I never though of that

Come to think of it, a friend called me on the home phone today. Said she tried to sms me, came back failed, then tried calling my cell, went straight to voice mail

Better have a word with Mishka
