Well, I saw my first Hyacinth macaw today at a bird store, and I must say, I'm jealous of anyone who has one. They're just beautiful! Although, my favorite looking are still Greenwings, I just love the deep red! All-in-all, I have to say greenwings!:red1:. Hyacinths are definitely a close second:blue:

Stunning aren't they? I agree I think Greenwings are one of the most beautiful. Deep Red is my fav color so I might be a little biased.

I have only owned one, which is my blue and gold. So of course gotta pick her :) but I will say I love the Scarlett macaws also! There is one at my local pet store and I go straight to him everytime we go!!!

I watched a Buffons for a couple days a very long time ago. It thought it was a very pretty bird. It was supper mellow, and what little info I can find about them said they had a mellow affectionate temporment?

Isnt a Buffons also known as a Military Macaw?

Wendy is correct. They are easily confused. a Buffon's is much bigger about Green Wing size and have a lighter green body. Easiest way to tell the difference is the the eyes. Buffon's have grey eyes vs Military have yellow eyes.

Buffons are also known as great green macaws, and they are also critically endangered.

I've worked with about 4 of these guys. I don't believe they were imported in great numbers into the US. And I have to agree, I've worked with more Hys than Buffons...

Buffons tend to be a little bit on the beaky side. Not as bad as Scarlets or even militaries... but more inclined to use their beaks to communicate forcefully, if they are displeased about something.

But if you approach one, and his face turns bright red? THAT BIRD IS NOT HAPPY TO SEE YOU! It's pretty much the opposite of a red front or a blue throat's face turning red. (Territorial Intrusion Warning - Ignore at your own risk.)

I had the pleasure of spending about an hour today with a 4 year old hyacinth. It was pretty awesome. Just reaffirmed that I love hyacinths. Trying to wrap my mind around the price tag.

Which begs the question, why are these guys so expensive?

Are they hard to breed?
Is there very few breeders?

The BTM is getting very hard to get due to regulations, but pricing is no where near Hyacinth range.....very curious as to why.

1. The were rare and endangered, and at one time were hard to come by. (Not as much anymore.)

2. They are somewhat hard to breed, and take FOREVER to wean.

3. They are difficult birds to hand feed, and are specialized feeders.

4. They are highly sought after, so the demand is there.

Ergo, higher prices.

I think they are a little over inflated. Probably better off going directly to a breeder. The store wanted $15,000. I get that they are difficult to wean, have a high chick mortality rate and it's a supply and demand thing but $15,000 just seems too high. There are a lot more critically endangered birds out there that are harder to get that don't come anywhere near the price of a hyacinth.

Um... Harlequin, but I'm a little biased since V is the only macaw I've ever owned lol. I have dealt with a B&G before, very sweet bird and friendly with everyone who greeted him so I'd have to say if I hadn't gotten V, a B&G would probably be my fav :)

Well I love my baby B&G she is sweet and loves me plus is the only one I have for now ,, but I will love to own a scarlet in the future , I go crazy everytime I see one at the birdhouse .

Hyacinths are big, bold, beautiful and intelligent.
Greenwings tend to be mellow and have brilliant coloration
Blue and golds are playful clowns and are equally eye catching.
hahns and noble macaws are great macaws in small packages.
Blue throats are extremely clever and intelligent.
Wait, what was the question again?
