Attention Moderators!

Can we please close this thread....

My Skittles just saw the photos of Fargos room and said that I suck and she wants to move to the down under. This is coming from a rescue bird that barely speaks. She said if I was too cheap to pay for her flight to meet Fargo, that she would just fly there. This coming from a bird with atrophy in one of her wings and can't fly.

We must close this thread before more of our parrots see how spoiled Fargo is...

:09: :30: :D

HAHAHAHAHAHA

When i read the first line i thought What! Why! haha

It appears i am going to have these huge flocks of birds flying from all around the world coming to my house :09:

Heyyy, I think Skittles might have a thing for Fargo hey? ;) :54:

Thank you !

oh. my. god. I wish I could do that to my room. cooper's play areas are sorta split throughout the house. playgym in almost everyroom :D haha. fargo's room looks great!

Haha! Thats awesome though, gets to play all over the house! :D

We have a cat who would LOVE to eat fargo who lives inside, so Fargo is only allowed out when he is locked away! So all his stuff is just in my room, then when hes out in the house he will just sit on chairs! haha

Thanks! :)

Awesome!! Look forward to seeing pictures of the tree when its done! :D

Sure thing, hopefully will be done by the end of the year. Need some free time though. Dam School!! ;)

Hahaha hey only 2 years to go until you are finished though right :p Then you can spend all day building stuff and hanging with your birds! ;)

Well actually a year and a half, or a bit less thank god. But Yeah, can't wait for it. :D

Jacob is telling me he's moving... He is packing his bags right now and is heading to your house!! LOL That's amazing.. Im hoping to be able to give jacob something similar one day.. :)

Steven loves the bedroom, says it's perfect

Steven is definitely taken but it would be a platonic friendship

As for Fargo I think Steven will have to re-think ummmm

:grey:

If you don't mind me asking how much do you think you have spent in total on all of Fargo's stuff. The only thing he doesn't seem to have that mine has got is a massive TV to watch whilst I'm out.

When I've got a bigger house I want to put aside a whole room for my macaw and put a net over the whole back garden to turn it into an aviary.

Hmmmm i honestly have NO idea
About- 350 for cage, 200 for net and wood, 300 dollar bulk toys, 100 dollar bulk toys, 75 dollar bulk toys, 50 dollar bulk toy, 160 dollar cat gym, other random toys here and there, 50 dollars plastic chain.... Cant really remember everything :/ then just ropes and plastic foot toy orders every time he runs out haha

Then all the natural wood trees and branches i just make myself!! Takes me a while, especially to do his little natural gym, took ages! haha

The thing that sucks, is in america, they will pay 30 dollars for a huge macaw toy, and for the exact same one here, its 100 dollars... and all the acrylic foraging toys he has are double the price.. So not fair, and then they have all these amazing gyms and stands, but there arent any of those in Australia :31: Even england has a greater ranges of gyms and toys :(

I have the 2 computers on my desk, so one is usually left on for him when i am out, maybe music or a movie, it appears his favourite movie is lion king ;)

I would love to have a outdoor aviary for Fargo, but we have cats, snakes, huge spiders, dogs, that would all love to eat him :p The cat in the house already wants him for dinner :54:

Would love to see a picture of your macaws room!

Tab, it burns my @r$e too about the cost of bird things here in Australia!

Just last night, I was looking at parrot toy videos on YouTube. One of them showed what the woman (in the US) said was 'two weeks' supply' of toys for her 'large birds'. She reckoned she'd spent 'less than thirty dollars'. HAH! Just quickly totting up what she had, I reckon there'd have been very little change from five hundred Australian dollars!

So, I make all my toys from recycled stuff and cheap things I buy from the Op Shop. Today, I got a bagful of plastic balls and bells for a dollar, five wicker baskets for fifty cents and a stainless steel mesh bottle holder (ie. foraging toy) for two dollars. This evening, my dear husband (who has been a saint lately) cut some roundels of wood from a pine pallet he got from a mate. He drilled holes in them and they're currently soaking in food colouring - they'll be a kebab of some sort. He's also making me a heap of custom perches from silky oak and brush box branches as well as some long 'beads' out of broom handle cut into lengths and drilled.

The best thing is the ongoing playgym he's building for me (well, the birds, actually...) above the back door. It's just a square frame made from PVC plumbing and electrical pipes suspended above the door in the transom space. But there are cleverly hung swings and a cargo net and a ladder and a boing and a circular swing-thing and lots more planned for it. Once it's fully set up, I'm hoping the Beaks will prefer to stay there rather than sneaking into my sewing room and chomping on my overlocker. Oh, and horrifying our ancient cat by flying a millimetre over her head as she sleeps on the bookshelf.

I have to say, though, that it gives me a *lot* of satisfaction making my own toys, probably in the same way I like to make clothes for my family. It's nice to be able to make exactly the right thing instead of hoping a bought item will fit right. Y'know? It could be worth your while to save the money you might spend on toys and invest in a little cordless power drill and a dremel tool and some nice wood of different textures?

There's a shop on ebay called Let's Talk Birds. June, who runs it, is lovely and so helpful - her prices are more reasonable than any others I've seen and I'm glad to mention her here in case other Australian members are interested in buying toys or toy parts. She has beads, metal parts, leather and wooden parts as well as bells and shredding material and whatever else you could think of. No connection, just a satisfied customer etc. :)

I know it is insane right!!!!! and even our expensive toys dont even look as good as the fancy ones in america hahaha Just the designs and sizes are so much better!

Oh really?!?!?! That is awesome! See i never go out to the shops, so everything i do is online hahaha

Thats a very nice husband you have there! hehe
Oh cant wait to see the gym!!! Sounds amazing!! I am sure they will all love it with all that to play on! hahaha

I have TRIED to make my own toys, with untreated pine, saw it up, hang it on leather, but he doesnt touch it, and natural toys he just destroys the bark and then gives up cause its too difficult!

You can see on the cat gym theres the wooden toys, with big blocks, he doesnt touch them, i have no idea why.. He used to destroy wooden blocks in seconds.. and now he doesnt like them anymore :(

He prefers tiny little pieces he can chomp in half in a second, or plastic.. He LOVES plastic, like the nuts and bolts, wings, spiral circle things.. But i cant find out where to get them bulk?!?

In america you can get a bag of 12 of the plastic wing and nut things for about 4 dollars, but here they are all just on toys, i cant find them separately :S

I LOVE LETS TALK BIRDS!!!! :p Their prices are the cheapest i have found as well!! Alot cheaper than actual online parrot stores!!

Thats where i got the net and some toys from, she was very helpful!
Fargo is actually a model for some of her things HAHA

Hey Shayne, we need PICTURES of your setup(s) then.

Oh Wow! That's Fargo? Now I'll pay much more attention to June's ads. LOL!

I buy plastic baby and toddler toys from ebay and Op Shops. Also, I get all my family to save milk bottle and other drink lids as well as peanut butter and jam lids (the plastic ones). The Beaks like to chew on those. I find they like variety. I gave them a lot of paper and cardboard, which they went to town on, but then they got really sick of it. I've found they need a variety of chewies and I don't give them all their toys all the time. I've also gotten cardboard fabric bolts from Spotlight and drilled holes in them. Then, I stuff bunches of drinking straws into the holes.

I guess I just watch for what the Beaks like to chew around the house and then try to replicate what they go for. It's a big job, trying to keep ahead of clever birds, isn't it? :D

Hey Shayne, we need PICTURES of your setup(s) then.

You've gone and upset me now although it's not your fault.

Here's the truth. I didn't want to talk about it because it brings a tear to my eye, but I don't have my macaw anymore. But I keep pretending that I do as it brings me some comfort to still feel like part of the community.

I was living with one of my friends for the last few years but in recent months things havn't gone so well. But that's an even more devestating story for another day.

I couldn't afford to stay there by myself so I had to move back into my parents house and despite all the begging and pleading they wouldn't let me keep my macaw there.

But I found a solution as a guy I met in the local pet shop who lives in the next town said that he used to look after a macaw and would take my one in and let me come and visit him when I wanted.

That was going OK for a few months but I still greatly missed him as I used to take him with me everywhere that I could. But then I went on holiday for a few weeks and when I returned he'd sold him. He said that he became too noisy and his partner made him sell him. He didn't even have the number for the person that he sold him to. I'm not going to repeat what I said to him. I shouldn't have been so stupid to have trusted a stranger. I do have a history of being far too trusting of people. He seemed to know his stuff but just took advantage of my desperation.

I loved that bird to bits. I miss him more than my grandparents and he brought so much joy into my life and I miss giving him a cuddle every night.
Now I'm just trying to fill the void but the only places that I can find where I can go and interact with other Macaws are a long way away.

I went to see a parrot rescue sanctuary to make a fuss out of his macaws and wanted to do some volunteer work for him but at 150 miles away it's too far for regular visits. But luckily I made two new feathered friends at tropical birdland in desford who let me hold and cuddle them. Although they are still too far away for regular visits. It costs me £40 in fuel just to drive there and back. Not that I wanted to come back. The woman that worked there pretty much had to kick me out. I'd been making a fuss of these two macaws for over 4 hours.

So now I just pretend to have him still as it gives me some comfort to still feel like part of the community. I know I have weird ways of dealing with things. But hopefully he's perfectly happy wherever he is.

Still if you want a picture here's one you will like. This is my snakes vivarium I made a few years ago. At least my mum let me keep her.

Shayne, I'm so sorry! Really I wish there was something I could do to get your baby back for you! You will always belong here and be part of the community! Dont ever forget that! *hugs*

Your so lucky, my mom and dad would never let me have a Macaw while I live in their house!! Have fun with your baby!!!! :)

I hear you but in time you will have your own place. I doubt my parents would have let me had a Macaw when I lived with them (for different reasons). I think the only reason I had pet birds growing up was because my mother supported it.

Wow, he literally doesn't have to poop in the same place twice. I did notice there seems to be no snake "doggie-door", this is probably just a design oversight. ;)
