Yeah, definitely prevent them from doing it. If they're the opposite sex, they may have babies.
I don't think you'll necessarily know their gender know just becauss they mated, since same sex birds can mate(yes, I've had that happen with my flock), and sometimes the female is the one on the male(not always, but sometimes).
