Emergency-- African Grey oozing liquid.

Glad to hear your little guy is doing okay. Keep us updated! Sorry the breeder is flaking out, but I guess at this point every bit helps.

so glad he made it through the surgery okay. I can't believe that the breeder only offered to pay for $100 of the surgery. Is this normal practice? Even stores like petsmart have a 14 day guarantee on live animals, you only had this baby for 2 weeks and the vet said that it looked like an old wound that reopened. Seems like the breeder should be partially responsible, if not entirely responsible. I'm guessing she sells her babies for around $900, I can't believe all she can afford to help with is $100...

Yea, He was 950, but then with the carrier, shipping and paypal fees, it was closer to probably 1250. Her health gauruntee is on her website and in this case, the issue was found after 72 hours. He did see an avian vet within 72 hours and was deamed fully healthy, but this type of injury was just waiting to rear its ugly head. I don't think the vet could look that deep down in his crop. A friend of mine said to be firm with her and threaten legal action, but based off her policy page, I probably wouldn't have a leg to stand on. My only hope is that she really thinks I somehow did this, and when I present her with the info from my vet, she has a change of heart. I did learn that she has a hand feeder who hand feeds the babies until they are on 2 feedings a day, then she takes over. So there are two possible points of failure. Maybe her hand feeder figured the scab meant it was healed and didn't notify her.

I thought he'd be upset with me and hold a grudge, but when he came out the carrier he just wanted to cuddle and was begging for head scratches. I guess I can just be thankful that I am his Mom, because maybe someone else wouldn't have been so willing to put up the money up front without the breeder backing them. Luckily, I still live at home and my money is a bit more flexible than those who might have rent or mortgage payments.

So glad your bird appears to be OK after the surgery...

What an ordeal it must have been for both of you...

Max had a 30 day health guarantee, which I think is normal in Australia...

Hi Jenlynn
Im really pleased he is doing ok :D I feel the same, im sure the breeder could have offered more than that towards it !!
Let us all know how hes getting on :D x

I'm glad he's doing okay!

I can't help but think the breeder should help out more with this. If it was an older injury, then she was responsible.

Any updates on your grey? I hope he's doing better now.

Yes, thanks for reminding me to post. He's 100% back to normal and even starting to talk. I know I have heard him say I love you, and he does a wolf whiste. It's still mostly when we are out of the room and downstairs just overhearing him but he's trying.

The breeder actually ended up sending 200, which paid off my balance with the vet. I just owe some money to my family because they lent me 250 because the vet required a 50% down payment for the surgery. I think she handled it satisfactory. I guess its possible she didn't know he had the injury and she took my word that I didn't attempt any hand feeding on my own and cause the injury myself.

The worst part was after the surgery because I had to give him meds in a syringe he really regressed and begged a lot for hand feeding forumula. I was very against finishing off hand feeding which is why I chose him because she promised he was fully weaned and was about a month older than the other hand fed greys available. Thank God, he's been maintaing his weight and the begging has stopped a bit. I haven't ever hand fed and I've read so much online advising against it for beginers.

Everything has worked out great and I am so thankful to have him!

So glad to hear this ended well!!

pLEASE U HAVENT UPDATED WHAT HAPPEND WITH YOIUR BIRD PLEAS REPLY AND TELL US

Didn't she just do that?

I'm glad to hear your bird is doing well. It sounds like a frightening ordeal. And I have to agree the breeder should have stepped up more than he/she did.
