Domnijoe Pets and Art is the name of my art studio and former bird breeding escapade. I bred cockatiels for almost 20 years, with a few forays into Green Cheeks Conures. These days I'm still doing art but have since retired from the breeding hobby as it is 1)expensive, 2)I'm moving into a location that only allows 2 pets and no breeding allowed and 3) My conure pair turned out to be 2 hens, LOL!

In the 20 years I've had birds, I've had everything from cockatiels to budgies, three species of conure, quail, doves, Zebra Finches and a white capped pionus (and a partridge in a pear tree). Most of those were chicks. At my height of bird ownership I had 21 birds. Now I'm down to two - Redshift, my retired Cockatiel breeder cock, and Charlie, my rescue Peach Front Conure. I've had redshift since 2001-2 and Charlie I adopted from a woman who was dying in the hospital. He came to me at 21 years old! He was very much loved and I am trying to love him as much as his former owner did :) .

I want a Pionus. Like seriously want want want a pionus. Now, if possible, LOL (We've all had days like this, am I right?). I've got to save up for a bird, though, so I'm on a waiting list until the white caps the breeder has, have eggs. The catch, besides waiting for my funds to be saved, is the move to a different part of the city, and waiting for my elderly boys to pass on. But at the same time, I love my birds and refuse to give them away. I love my boys too much to just toss them away like old cigars.

I really have no point to this rambling, except to say I'm impatient. I waited 2 years for my first White Capped Pionus, August, and if I have to wait 2 years for a new bird, so be it :) . It's just dealing with the 'nownownownow' voice in my head. Ugh.

Poor Redshift isn't sure what to do with himself now that he's all alone. He's never been an only bird in the 21 years I've had him. He's such a little love sponge and might start screaming to get my attention once StrongArm is out of eye and ear shot. He loves company, what can I say? I might have him out with Charlie at play time. Might cheer him up. :)

The birds are out cold, lol. I, however, am struggling with insomnia yet AGAIN, much to my annoyance. Even the dog is sleeping right now. Le sigh.

Once I can afford it, I hope to get a bigger cage. Or a better one, rather, for Redshift. Then there's Charlie. I don't know if he's just old or he's seriously sedentary in his older age, but Charlie has a huge cage he sits in and he doesn't move around in it. I've got stuff to encourage exercise, but he sits on the same side of the cage all day. **MUST** be his old age. Same thing happens with Red. Redshift, though, is slightly more active and crawls about his cage like an exploring parrot should. :)

I was wondering why you're always up at night in your timezone! So sorry to hear you're battling with insomnia.

Older birds tend to be perch potatoes. Just like a lot of people become less physically active as they get older.

Thanks :) My Oma (Grandmother) has insomnia a lot in her older years, so I may have inherited it from her.

Yaaay for perch potatoes! LOL! My Charlie is one of the biggest (and cutest) Perch Potatoes out there! He's had issues keeping his balance lately due to his toes (I suspect arthritis), so I've moved stuff around for him and kept his all time favorite toys close. It has encouraged him to move more often. :)

X-posted from my FB Feed :)

Researching parrots I'm gonna get when my old farts pass on. Looking at a WHite capped Pionus or a Blue headed Pionus. Both are about the same price-wise, have very similar personalities and as I have experience with WHite caps, it would be cool if I got another pionus. I have two names set out for my next bird. Don't get me wrong - I have a sweet spot for my old farts right now and they're special as all hells to me, but I need to juggle facts right now instead of pining for the loss of my other birds. I want a bird that will live a long time, will be laid back and is easy to handle. I want a bird that is similar to Mindwipe (My Familiar! LOL!) , but like August (My first WHite cap) and has a personality of their own. Charlie is 22 this year. I'll be shocked if he lives another three years. By then, I'll have had time to save up for a new bird while enjoying my time with the boy. Same goes for Redshift.
I love my birds. Love 'em while you have them
🙂

I hate to say it, but I contacted a fella in Montreal, Quebec, Canada about a blue headed pionus. They're selling their bird for $500, which is half of their usual price. I'm curious to see why they're selling. I have to wait for my current boys to pass before I bring home another bird, so I just contacted the seller out of sheer curiosity.

I hear back about StrongArm/Sassy in a few more days. She's got a vet trip scheduled through her rescue. She has an inflamed eye that I missed and that's why she's going. OY I feel like an idiot for missing it. I still miss her. SPending more time with The Boys as a result and they seem appreciative of the gesture :)

I had a funny thing happen to me today. I am forever yelling at Winter, my dog, to get out of things. Plus she barks a lot for a sighthound. I grew up with whippets, which are practically mute for a day or three, so this 'yappy' dog gets on my nerves sometimes. So she was getting into something, barking as she did so and I yell at her to 'SHUT UP' out of pure exasperation.

Then as soon as the words were out of my mouth, I hear, in a tiny conure voice: 'SHUT UP!'. Charlie had mimicked me. The little stinker, LOL! They're not kidding that birds only have to hear the words once to remember and repeat it! He and Redshift will chirp/say night night as I turn the light off at night. All I have to do is touch the lamp on the desk and they're telling me 'night night' :)

I'm still looking for a Pionus parrot. There's a fellow selling his Scaley Head/Maximilian but.. yeah. I can't afford one right now, otherwise I would have contacted the seller. :) Between moving, and bringing Winter to the vet for her yearly vaccinations, etc... yeah. I'm gonna be broke for a while.

I've noticed that my cockatiel, Redshift, is much more scream-y since he's been a lone bird. He screams when I'm in the room, when I'm out of the room, and even when I'm talking to him. I've contact called him on these occasions and it seems to help.

Had a horrible, horrible nightmare where I dreamed I was moving, but my mom told me I couldn't bring my birds because housing wouldn't let me bring them. But I could have another bird when I moved in. I told my mom I was getting a Pionus when I moved! And that was that! I remember crying in my dream. Like a really bad, heavy crying. It was awful. I also had to look for new homes for my boys. **Shudders** Thank the Gods it wasn't real!

I don't think I've ever mentioned that Redshift and Charlie love the song 'Rock'n Robin' (By Robbie Day) and 'Blackbirds' (by the Beatles). Redshift likes to scream at the whistling in the songs. I even caught him twittering to the beat a few years back. Like he was a drummer! It was quite comical to listen to. :) Charlie simply talks and is quiet during the songs. Again, very comical watching him!

Charlie fell off his perch yesterday. He's okay, but it does make me worried. Going to keep an eye on him to see if it's something more serious...

Winter (The dog) needs a vet visit for her vaccinations. Thankfully that doesn't happen until next month :) . I wish my mobile vet did birds. Unfortunately she doesn't. Ah well.

I had a phone consultation/appointment with my diabetic specialist today. He was TWO. HOURS. LATE. AAARG! I'm not mad. Just very annoyed because I could have done more , like, oh, Pack my stuff in my bedroom. **pulls her hair out in frustration** Despite all that, I did find out my last blood test was pretty good . My insulin's been reduced and my dosage of Ozempic has gone up. :) Well worth the 2 hour wait!
