We have had Tiki for almost 2 weeks now and for the last three days I have been home from work so he's out most of the day with the exception of a couple hours here and there. Anyway, I noticed these last three days that he doesn't like to poop in his cage. The breeder started to poop train him and he did really well - goes poop on the floor, and I have continued this as well as asking him to poop on play gym and while in the cage before coming out. However, he does not do it before coming out. He will wait until he's out of cage and do it on the floor. No big deal we have hardwood and I am always there to clean it up with some vinegar and water, but I am worried that he doesn't poop in cage. Not even overnight. Albeit I know they hold it at night but in the morning he will not poop when we ask him to and then as soon as he comes out he does it. I don't want to keep him in cage when we are up. Should I be concerned or will be eventually go when I am at work all day?

He will poop in the cage if left in there. I know Fred prefers to go outside of the cage vs in the cage. I keep a piece of newspaper on the floor in front of his cage because if the cage is open he will climb out to poop off the edge vs in the cage. He also knows when I have him and start walking toward the cage he will poop real quick so he doesn't have to in the cage.

It's one of those you don't want to poop where you eat.

Could you possibly put a small trashcan by the cage with a liner, that way he will go in the small trash can? Just an idea, not an expert by any means.

However, I also worry that when you go back to work, he may hold it too long.

Anxious to see what the "experts" have to say. As a newbie bird owner, let me know what happens and good luck!

So we slept in a little later this morning, got up at 7:00 am and I usually open the cage to let him out at 6:30ish and noticed that he had done the big morning dump in the cage (sorry, TMI). Thanks for the advice everyone.

My Maxx knows he can't come out of the cage in the morning until he does his poop bomb. So first thing he does after he is uncovered is does his morning dump.

I wish we had time in the morning to train tiki to dump before coming out, but we need to feed him, clean cage and be off to school/work.
