Do Parrots Understand What They Say?

Seems Kyo isn't alone in the talking green cheek abilities :)

I'm waiting for the day that she starts yelling at the cat in the living room.
"DOUGAL NO!" "BE GOOD DOUGAL" "STOP TEASING THE BIRD!"

So far, she says "poopie" after pooping. She gives me kisses when I ask for them. She says "I love you" in response to me saying hi.

And she also repeatedly says poopie or I love you when she really really wants to come out. I think she's trying to suck up or informing me that she has done her poopie and promises not to poop on the floor :p she often tricks me and immediately poops on the floor and flies off after fibbing to me. Naughty girl. I'm certain she knows what she's doing.

I have to admit, her saying "Hi Kyo" sounds an awful lot more like "**** you" sometimes….. hehe I once confronted my poor hubby because I thought he had taught her to cuss.

She also talks to the starlings outside yelling "Hey birdie" at them.

I'm so proud of my baby. She has well surpassed my expectations for intelligence and talking ability.

were you a little shocked? when we got her I didnt' think conures really spoke.

Foo talks to the Blue Jays, she knows their obnoxious yell they do. :p

We have a starling, and it's learning conure speach, haha. :) We should of called that one velcro. I cant do anything without it attached to some part of me. It HATES me on the computer and fights me over the keyboard.

Headless bird on hand as we speak:

Made me think of this. Someone else in the forum shared it. I watch it every single day (sometimes multiple times). At 33 seconds I lose it. This bird definitely knows what SHHHHH means! [ame="https://youtu.be/-f3Wxn75smM"]https://youtu.be/-f3Wxn75smM[/ame]

This makes me want a Macaw!! .... you know... if I wasn't a beakophob!

I really was! I never expected her to learn to say anything. :)

The foot is what makes it. At the end when he shushes again it does the open to closed foot. Like a human using there hand in a duck beak way saying zip it. Ohhhh it brings me to tears

That is what day to day is like with a big mac. I keep telling you the're big mushy goofballs. The downside being, that you don't necessarily get a break from that "big bird" personality.... they are super attention oriented. They don't allow you to ignore them.

They will do something to get your attention...

Even if it means taking the door to their cage off, and waddling up the stairs to find you...

"HI!!!"

Well, hello! How did you get up here?!

Training a big mac not to bite can be done in a matter of hours to days... after that it's pure goofball.

LOL! That is hilarious! I got a great visual.
The breeder I got Gollum from has a beautiful Mac. She had her parents and has had her since an egg!
I dont know what it is about them. They make me feel so small. When she looked me in the eyes, I felt primitive. She is beautiful. However... I do seem to tremble when near them.

I think they do. Yesterday, I grabbed a piece of cheese and started to eat it on my way upstairs. Before I got to the landing Swoop said "Cheese". I was shocked. I usually give him cheese but i take it to him, ask him "What is it?" and he says "Cheese", then I give it to him. He was at the other end of the room so I'm not sure how he knew it was cheese. Smell maybe? The sound of the fridge drawer? I don't know, but he did get some. :)

He has a great memory. When we got him Oct 1988 he was 5 months old. I was trying to figure a name for him and because of his color started calling him Pooh. (As in Winnie the Pooh) I didn't call him that very long but he will still randomly say "Hi Pooh" after all these years.

When my inlaws first got their cockatoo, it took a team effort of 45mins to get him in his cage. He was happy as larry, being cocky as anything and having a ball of a time. Eventually, he just gave up and went in. Then he said "Okay, we can go now".
Henry will do a lovely honking IRN scream in my ear. So I tell him that's not nice, and he needs to be quieter. So he does a half pitch scream in my ear instead.
