I did not get my yellow shoulder Amazon for the sake of talking, if I wanted a great talker I would of gotten a African grey. I'm curious how well can a yellow shoulder Amazon talk and second can they talk in context?

Don't know about YSA, but both of mine DO talk in context. :D

Sam has entire conversations with himself, a RIOT to listen to, especially if he talks in tongues (evil sounds).

I think amazons do. but I also think it depends on how you talk to them, if you talk to them like a person or child I believe they will talk in context. If you just repeat words without any meaning the bird will only be learning sounds.

LOL Kenji talks in a evil voice too! Usually it's really warbled words and they sound like a screamer band. I call it his possessed voice

My pet hen nape talks in context, You ought to hear her say"Come here!!" ,LOL. The only time she say's it is when she MEANS it.She's a Yellow nape who does talk and sing but i wouldn't call her a" talker". I don't think YSA are known to be "talkers" but like many amazons they can talk. Alot depends on the individual bird , not the species. If you want a "talker" wait to get a bird until you hear it speaking words otherwise it's the "luck of the draw" with any species. (IMO "talkers" start early with many different words/ phrases)

Talking ability is not that important to me. My sun conure didn't even say a word and I loved him for his antics and silly personality.

I heard mixed things on yellow shoulder amazons, some sources I read say they can be very good talkers and some sources say poor to moderate. You can't get straight answers on the internet.

Well that statement is true , " CAN be very good talkers... but (most) are poor to moderate" . That basically what i posted.

So in relation to a yellow nape which is supposed to be the best, I guess most won't be as good as most yellow napes but you can get one that can be?

Keyword "supposed" to, Billy. My DYH outtalks my YN big time, and he's only a little over 1.

Hunter started talking when she was only 4 months old. Sam learned every word Hunter says plus many, many more. He can sound EXACTLY like her, but then he also has his own "speaking" voice.

I think the Capt is right that "good" talkers start quite young. At first it will sound like mumbling, but before you know it you'll be able to distinguish what they're trying to say.

And Ashley is right about HOW you talk to them. I don't sit here and repeat word after word....I talk to them like they are people, lol.

I'm not sure on YSA but my DYH talks in context. He doesn't talk too much but has shocked me on occasion. At the ver in the waiting room he said "I wanna go home"
one day after a shower he said "I'm wet"
And he's said a few other things completely in context.

Jackie says things in context, he also laughs at funny moments and says "I'm sorry" or "don't cry" when he hears crying...They're pretty smart!!

Oh he's also picked up a few things since being with us- when my son (1.5) squeals or whines jackie also squeals lol it's kinda cute and funny

I'd say that's true. I have several napes that say very little, others won't shut up,LOL. IMO DYHs are the more likely to talk but napes are good too. The best "talker" i,ve ever been around was a Pan. But most of my Pans aren't "chatter boxes". They talk but not like DYH and YNA.

Out of curiosity, how many Amazons do you have?

Without counting, about 40. (only 8 or 9 living in the house at this time)

Wow, that's a lot. How many other types of parrots?

All zons, A handful of older breeder tiels and one pair of TAGs. I'll just stick to my favorite birds and stay small scale.

Wow, 40? Sunrises and sunsets must be very interesting around your place. LOL!

My new Pan says a few phrases already, and loves to imitate sounds. He really listens closely to everything we're saying to him, so I bet that it's just a matter of time before he's talking in context.

What are the greys like compared to the Amazons? Just curious

My TAGs are VERY shy, secretive, wild.(breeder birds not pets) My bother had one of their babies for a long time and it was a great bird until it heard a smoke alarm. Amazon are the best companion birds, IMO. They are intelligent, out going, and can adapt to being a human companion better than most species. PS they are VERY easy to "read"

I agree. My Lory talks in context. We talk to her just like she was a person. She also listens to phrases my husband and I say to each other - one of them is "Ready to go dear?" She will now say that to us just about 5 minutes before we leave the house... not sure how she figures out how close to being ready to go we are... but she knows. :)
