Finally the bacterial culture results are in for my rescues. All are upper respiratory bacterial infections: Rico ( MRH Amazon ) has 3, Buddy ( Alexandrine ) has 2 , Bonnie ( Cockatiel ) has 2. They all only share 1 alike, which was most likely shared by Rico to the others in the quarantine room. The suns and the blue crowns are all clear, as is Clyde (Tiel) and Lola ( Zon ). I should receive the fungal culture results tomorrow. Sham, Shame, Shame on the people I rescued these precious babies from! You cannot keep these delicate babies out in the weather with no rain protection on cat food diets !!! I was so blessed to become their mother, as they have improved in the short 3 weeks I have had them. Also, Buddy is molting and has lost most of his lace doily feathers, and is getting some new beautiful ones. They bring me such joy ! I will update when I receive the fungal results. Please keep them in your prayers for a speedy recovery ( and that they take their meds well ).

Poor things. Wishing them a very speedy recovery!

Mind if i ask what that cost ? I'm thinking of changing to a vet who does his own lab work. Did they give you liquid Baytril ? We usually do 10 days followed with probotics. good luck hope they get well soon and the fungals come back negative.

Richard I was charged $215.00 and the vet gave health checks to 9 birds with culture swabs on everyone. We are awaiting fungal cultures and when they come back, then vet will decide which meds to treat with. I will keep you updated.

Wow thats so cheap! :O He sounds like a good vet!

:11: Phenomal price!!!

Bless you for rescuing these precious babies and taking such good care of them. I just know you will be very much rewarded. :)

Best of luck and prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.

Well first off my vet is mobile, and has treated my birds for quite a long time. She also cut me a break due to the fact that she knew they were all rescues who had never been vetted. She knows she will get alot of future revenue from me, plus I have refered new clients to her in the past. You tend to have a different relationship with a mobile vet, you allow them into your private home and it is more of a friendship than a business deal. Plus I baked her cookies, as I knew someone would surely misbehave during their exam.

Just ran across this post and found it interesting... Nyla Copp from Birdie Buddy was just up here (here being the Reno/Sparks area of Nevada) to do a presentation about getting our birds *out doors*!!!

You mentioned that some of those birds have respiratory problems because they've been outside in the weather with no protection and on cat food. Nyla started out in bird ownership when she found a peach faced lovebird. She took her new pet in to an avian vet, and the a-vet started listing off a bunch of health problems with the poor little lovie. One of those problems was an upper respiratory infection! Her a-vet told her to get her lovebird outside!

Nyla was stunned by this response. Her lovebird has spent a week at the vets place getting treatments and Nyla was doing everything she could to learn about proper bird care! And when she came to pick up her lovie, her vet told her to put the lovie outside! Why put a sick bird outside? Well, studies have shown that the air inside our homes is more polluted than the air outside... and birds, having sensitive respiratory problems, benefit from that fresh air!

Nyla lives in southern California, and you are in Georgia where the air is denser and thick with humidity, so I don't know what the differences would be like... but I thought I'd relay this 'story', even if it might not be of any help to you! Maybe you'll at least find it of interest?

Thanks MonicaMc, I may try some fresh air on warm afternoons. Its getting into the 50's at night here now, so I definately want to make sure it has warmed up enough before taking him outdoors. I'm still awaiting the fungal culture results, so no meds have been started yet. If I dont get results today, I will call the vet back and push to start meds on the bacterial infections were have confirmed. I dont think he should wait any longer to begin treatment. I do have a air purifier in the bird room also, but I know that doesnt replace natural fresh air and sunshine.

UPDATE No fugus found in cultures !!! Meds are being called in and my babies will be on the road to recovery ASAP ! Hooray, Im so thankful no fungus showed up.

Glad to hear it! Hopefully, they have a strong enough system that they can recover from the bacterial infection without getting a fungal infection!
