nut lurves corn on cob, she'll eat corn then shred the cob, excellent food and chew toy in one :32:

well corn on cobs where on offer in our super market, so i got some, an fed them to a rather happy nut :32:

but i was worried i was feeding to much of it, so i shaved some corn off the cobs an put the cobs into the oven when i was baking, an hummm they smell fab! and nut loves them as chew toys as well, and as they have dried out some, there lighter for her to pick up

and she will spend forever shredding them :09: so that solves the left alone and entertained problem as she will not entertain activity toys, but loves anything she can shred

Corn on the cob: It's a treat and it's a toy! My Ruby loves it and shreds the whole cob after she's eaten all of the corn.

Abby is the same way... she loves the corn and then plays with the cob and totally destroys it..

That's such a great idea! Though I was just wondering how well birds can digest corn. I know that many animals can't digest it very well including humans.

lol crazy nut only eats the kernal bit in the corn the rest is left to bottom of the cage, but i was worried as corn is a rich food, so hence the shaving of of the corn so she just has the cob to shred an any left over kernals i've missed

Corn stalks & leaves are not really good ideas for birds because of the pesticide possibility, unless you grow your own.....

Are you boiling the corn and then putting it in the oven or just putting the raw corn in the oven? And for how long at what temp? I've always wanted to do this for my birds.

you can feed raw, boiled, baked just don't add anything

The market had it on sale so I got a few ears and cut pieces for my flock last night. They love corn and all shred the cob after. I feed it raw but without the leaves.

I'm just polishing off some corn cobs and searched to find out whether my galah could have the leftovers....

It had butter and pepper on it. Does that mean she can't have the remains?

Butter has some salt in it, unless you use unsalted & the rest is just fat...and...unlike all the websites that tell you they can't have salt, that's really just so much BS...the problem is that birds don't sweat like many mammals, but actually, all animals and birds do need some salt in their diets, though in moderation, say a medium potato chip maybe once a week.....I usually rub off the extra salt before giving to my guys & since I don't add extra salt to many of my foods, my flock enjoy sharing most things I eat ! ! !

To answer your question, I'd say the cobs & left over kernels should be OK as long as you haven't left a lot of salt on the cobs.....

That should be fine. The little bit of salt and fat from the butter that would be left after you ate most of it would be nil. If you are worried you could rinse it in hot water to get any excess butter off of it, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I continued searching after I posted, and it said that butter isn't good because it's high in fat but it isn't toxic. She never gets lollies or sugar or anything other than bird food so it should be ok to have a teensy bit of "bad" food. (she didn't seem very interested anyway That's usually how it goes when you think you are giving them a real treat; they just turn their noses up)
