Cookie Flew!!

Cookie flew for the first time today!

It was after feeding Cookie his formula.
Cookie went to the edge of the table where I was feeding him and Cookie looked like he wanted to fly. So I put him on the floor but he didn't get off of my hand. And while I was talking to my brother Cookie flew! And he flew pretty well for his first time. He flew around the room and crashed on the wall before falling. I picked him up and gave him a kiss cause he was so good.

now that Cookie flies..I have a question

What's the quickest way to train him?
He still crashes into things so that makes me a little worried. My brother said that his cockatiel didn't crash as much as Cookie does.

He flies when his name is called but when he gets to me he does a U-turn and flies around the room and then crashes.

I'm wondering if this is normal or not. If this isn't normal, what's the best way I can help him fly better?
Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Not all birds are equally 'gifted' (flying, talking, singing).


Japie is a bad example, no idea how old he is (started life somewhere in the previous century)- it took him 3 years to stop flying into walls, crashlanding etc..
Flying was no problem, landing (succesfully) takes more time, so it may be a while before he is confident enough to land on you (a moving perch-place)



Yours is a baby...these are his first flights, so let him learn.
If recall sort of happens...just make a HUGE deal out of it.. most parrots love a party

It was mainly because of the fact that my brother said that his bird didn't crash as much that got me worried. I'm glad that Cookie is normal (I guess). I'll continue training him until he stops crashing or until he won't fly away from me and have the courage to land somewhere.

Learning how to stick the landing is actually the hardest part of the whole flying operation. If Cookie is happy to step up on your hand you might try lots of short hops from there to the top of a cage or playstand. Give him plenty of praise and keep the sessions interesting, positive and short, only 5 minutes or so several times a day. It only needs to be a distance of a metre or two because it’s landing that he is learning, but I think you’ll find he picks it up pretty quick!

Well since Cookie is only around 5-6 weeks old (we don't know his hatchdate) he doesn't step up yet. He does climb on his ladder but he not step up. He does step up but very rarely. I hope that he'll learn how to land real quick. Until then around up to 2 or 3 flights each day

Here's a little update on how Cookie is doing

He can land on things now and has landed on me around 5 times! (only once on my hand though)
He first perched on me last night. I was just going to put him down before he just flew. At first I thought that he might fly around the room and crash but nope. He neatly landed on my shoulder
This was his second time landing somewhere.(the first being on top of his cage)

He also steps up now

Yeah but he barely flies to me now. Following my brother's 'tiel everywhere and totally ignores me.
(I think my brother's 'tiel hates it)
