Before I got Teeko, I was thinking about getting a Cockatiel. From what I've heard they're quiet, sweet and fine with less than 1-2 hours of attention. (However, I have no firsthand experience)
They also cost less, eat less and require smaller cages than Conures.
Conures on the other hand are way more 'parrot' and they really give you a 'big bird' experience but with a small body. They are more prone to biting, screaming and one-person-bird syndrome.
If you're looking for a companion to spend
a third to half of your day with that will cuddle, play and talk to you, get a conure.
If you would like a pretty little pet who likes to be stroked, whistles your favorite tunes and will be fine without attention for 3 days, you're better off with a tiel.
If you want an exotic bird that will happily sit in the corner, say 'Hello' when you come in, and never bite or scream, try one of these: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Gemmy-Talking-Parrot-Pete-Repeat/dp/B000EIFWNS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416871892&sr=8-1&keywords=talking+parrot+toy&pebp=1416871970084"]Amazon.com: Pete the Repeat Parrot: Toys & Games[/ame]
Please, please keep in mind how much of a commitment birds are!
I had done research for 2 months straight and still wasn't prepared to adopt one of my own.
He needs
a lot of attention, poops every 5 minutes, bites my loving parents, and tries to fly out the door when he can.
Only acquire a bird when you are truly ready! They are
nothing like cats or dogs. Not in any way.
I'm not trying to dissuade you, only warning you of what's to come.
Good luck!
