Considering getting a bird

Hi guys,

22 year old in my own house working 50 hours a week. Considering a small bird such as a Cockatiel. I used to own a cockatiel when i was a child which was from a breeder. Loved him and was sad when he passed on.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for me - Should I stay away from birds considering I work quite a lot of hours. I've always loved birds but am waiting for the right time to get one. I've also been doing a bit of research about them.

I'd actually love a lorikeet, but dont think it would be a good one to go for first, considering how long they live etc.

If you do get a bird I suggest getting a tamed one. I have 2 budgies and a tiel. My tiel was tame when I got him. The difference is huge. He is starting to come to me on his own.

Yeah I would definitely get one from a breeder that has been tamed. Cost more but worth the outlay.

I got lucky. My tiel came from a backyard breeder I found on Craigslist. He was only $40. He was badly clipped but that is my only complaint. So far he has gone to everyone who wanted to hold him. He has never bitten me hard enough to cause pain worse than a minor pinch even when he was very angry.

Tiel or a hand raised budgie would be a good choice.

I would go with an English budgie, or two if you work a lot it is not impossible to keep a bird, but there are challenges. EB's are super chill, and in my experience smart and easy to train, also like to play and keep themselves busy when you aren't around.

I would go for something small that you can give a large house, and hopefully a friend so that he won't be alone all of the time. Also it is important to establish a routine with them when working such a hectic schedule.

I WORK ABOUT THAT MUCH [who doesn't these days?!], PLUS I'M A SINGLE PARENT, PLUS I HAVE FIVE LARGE "HIGH MAINTENANCE" BIRDS...

A 'TIEL IS LOW MAINTENANCE. SHOULD BE FINE.

It's definitely possible to have a happy, healthy bird while working that many hours. I work the same long hours and, while it can be tiring at times, I feel it just becomes part of your daily routine to make sure your critters are taken care of and happy. With time, you'll be able to wind down and relax with your bird just hanging out on the couch after a long day at work.
