hello,
I've been thinking about getting another bird, i currently have three male budgies and was wondering if a cockatiel would get along with them? A couple of months ago I introduced the third budgie with no problems, but since it's a bigger species could there be some issues? I would buy another cage and feed them different diets and stuff, and I am also hoping to get a large bird room for them so they'd have a lot of space during the day. If not a cockatiel, what other breeds/species would get along with budgies?
thanks,
Kate :greenyellow::blue2::yellow2:

I do SO love budgies AND 'tiels.
Wow...
Fortunately (unfortunately?) the Rb is so aggressive and territorial that I've never even dared to think of another bird...
Many here have found that they have to separate birds permanently... some have been fortunate and multiple birds get along.
You just never know! Never, ever.
Good for you for being so responsible and serious, and for reaching out!
I think that as long as you're willing to deal with whatever happens (e.g., separating them, if needed, handling added expenses, etc.), you sound like a great parront.
Good luck!
Keep us posted, please.

I have 3 lovebirds and 1 budgie, the budgie is a new addition that finished quarantine about a week ago and they've taken great to her. Although lovebirds and budgies are not a recommended mix, I guess I was lucky. They're in separate cages but play nicely outside with her.

You can never guarantee two birds will get along, but as far as choosing species to share a home (assuming you get them different cages, etc), budgies and Cockatiels have an extremely high chance of peaceful coexistence and low risk of injury. That is exactly the species I would choose in this situation, and in fact they are both Australian grass feeding parakeets so even their diets are similar :)

My budgies and cockatiel live in separate cages, but share their daily living space outside of the cage. I was so scared that my budgies would not get along with my 'tiel when I brought her home for the first time, but luckily they tolerate each other very well. I say "tolerate" because they aren't exactly friends... but they have never displayed any real aggression. When my budgies get a little cranky and bother Berry she is so mild-mannered that she never reacts with more than a hiss.

That said, you never know how your birds will react to a new fid on the block, whether a different species or not, so you just have to make sure you introduce them in the best way possible, and keep them under strict supervision.

Good luck! Hopefully you get to bring a little 'tiel into your family.

I have two budgies and a cockatiel. Despite the larger size of my cockatiel, he is actually afraid when the budgies come near him. Most cockatiels are so laid back and non aggressive that the budgies would be the ones bullying the cockatiel if it came to that. My problem is that one of my budgies is in love with my tiel. This means she follows him around and poor Ducky always flies away from her. But other than that, they tolerate each other. There is no aggressive behavior between them.

Thanks for all the info! Since all my other birds are all males, would my cockatiel have to be a male too? Also would a hand raised tiel be easier to tame? Thanks again, and does anyone have any bird room ideas for budgies and potentially a cockatiel?

No need for it to be make, in fact in my experience females are usually sweeter.

A hand raised cockatiel would definetly be easier to tame. Ducky was hand raised and never needed to be “tamed”. He loved me from the start. Let the bird choose you!

Awesome thank you so, so much! :D
And sorry last question, with colour mutations, does the colour effect their temperament or make them more dusty?

Colour has no correlation with temperament - it's just an aesthetic thing. Whether Lutino, White-face, Cinnamon, or just plain grey, they are all just cockatiels at heart haha! The same goes for dust, from my knowledge. All cockatiels produce a lot of dander. The dust can go EVERYWHERE, which means that theres a bit of an extra effort cleaning, but it is all worth it!
