Blue & Gold Macaw

This is Pepper (formerly Karma) who announced her name was Pepper, so we have been using that. We were told she was a blue and gold but she has too much orange and red on her new feathers as she had plucked herself nearly bald before we got her. Any ideas from others would be appreciated. She is still and evil green chicken who bites furiously and will only step up when she thinks it is her idea!

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)

Pepper is BEAUTIFUL! I'm going to take a stab here and guess Catalina....but that's JUST a guess. ;)

I'm going to take a stab here
:eek::11:

please ignore the comments from the Jersey snow bound area, the chill must have rattled her brain to say she wants to stab your bird.:11::54:

ROFLMAO!!!! :D:D obviously just kidding, but without stabbing I'd guess Catalina as well. ;):D:54:

Thanks All, I am guessing Catalina as well, she seems rather small for a Macaw, but then she is somewhat "naked" and I know feathers add some "Fluff". There is a bit of Yellowish hue on the edges of her back feathers that give it a muddy blue-green color as well and the insides of her wings are a bright orange that fades to a "dirty" yellow. Also, her feet are very light in color.

I would also guess catalina, but it is extremely hard to tell with how much variation there is with the hybrids.

Thanks for posting the full body photos

She looks just like our catalina, but in truth you would have to DNA to tell between a Catalina and a Harlequin as the color variations can look the same. Our Catalina is not little, weighing about 1135 grams. As our vet said she is a "very large girl".

I have two Catalinas & I think Pepper looks more like a Catalina also. I will put up a few pics of mine on here & maybe you can look at Pepper & see is she resembles them.

This is Angel, Roscoe's older brother. He is a bit more orange/yellow on his chest

Harlequins typically have a red, or orange-red stomach.

Catalinas typically lean towards yellow-orange in coloration.

Turquoise's catalinas are extremely red. In fact, I'd believe them to be harlequins if she did not get them from a breeder.

My vote is Catalina.

Harlequins are very dark orange and honestly as stated before turqouises one Catalina looks like a harlequin the other not so much. So I'd say yours is a catalina.

Im Looking at Harlow right now [My Catalina ] Im thinking a Catalina [poor guy]

I am not very great at macaw mutations but I would say Catalina and GORGEOUS!!!!!

Hybrid, not mutation. ;)

I think the hybrids can be more confusing than the mutations!

Roscoe may look more darker like a harlequin, but he & Angel are full brothers from different hatchings. Their breeder doesn't breed Green Wings, so mine are definitely B&G/Scarlet hybrids which are Catalinas. They are also the size of their B&G parentage, not even close to a GW size.
