Cage?

Hi im a fairly new amazon owner and the cage he came with was really old and I needed to upgrade. I found a deal on craigslist for a larger one and got it for really cheap (70 dollars). So i ended up buying it.. I later found out that this cage is for cockatiels and that the mm of the bars and the spacing is to small.

This cage will work for my zon as he has disabilities (club foot) but for the future I would like to know what you guys recc. in the 150-200 range for him or any other future parrots.

I think the cage looks fine. Just don't over load it with toys and you are good to go. I have a 40"x30"x60" cage for my YN and it's way too big for him because he is literally a couch potato. I should have gotten one like yours. lol.

I am not sure what a bird with a club foot can or cannot do, so I think a bigger cage may have been a waste of space if he cannot climb very well.

What are the actual dimensions on that cage? Length X Width??

My DYH is in the same size cage Merlee's YN is in, but he uses every square inch of it, he is the opposite of a perch potato. Then I have my YN in a cage that is 36" wide and 30" deep, and that is plenty big for her as she isn't as active as my DYH.

I would not go smaller than 30" X 24" with ANY Amazon, club foot or not.

You want to be able to put at least 3 toys in there, to give your sweetie something to do and play with, including some foraging toys.

How active is your fid? Many people have cages mainly for sleeping because their birds are loose all day and playing elsewhere. The rule most people follow when it comes to cages is the bigger, the better. You know your bird better than we do so you just do what you think is best for this little one.

To save money, you may want to see if there are any bird fairs in your area. If you want to purchase a new cage in the future, cages at a bird fair can be purchased at least $100 less than what you find online because that is the built in cost for shipping. I paid $329+tax at a bird fair for my dome top HQ 40x30 and I have not seen a price as low as that anywhere online at the time of purchase.

You might also check eBay. I've seen some pretty cheap prices with free shipping. Make sure you check seller rating if you go that route.

Ok so my bird when in his cage has trouble perching on perches so i put 2 side by side about 2 inches apart so he can grab and waddle on each.. He has a ladder that he used to sleep on most of the time.. He can climb the cage sides but he doesn't do it often.. As far as toys.. Ive only had him for a few days so im not 100% sure.. He has a rope and wood chew toy which he doesnt touch and he also has a pineapple thing (beak trimmer thing?) I tood a cat toy that is rubber with holes in it and filled it with popcorn so he can forage through it but he hasn't touched it yet... and he has a mirror thingy.. Most of these He came with... Minus the cat thing... His disabilities is he cant grab toys as his one foot is clenched. so he needs to keep his good one on the perch at all times.. he doesnt perch on my hand well either. When put on floor he will follow me and chase the dog around. Im building a large play pen for him and 2 other birds who will be coming soon So it will have wheelchair access for gimpy lol I believe this is the cage as there are no markings on it A&E Cage Co. It is 31W x 22D x 35H inches

Have you seen him climb around in his new cage yet? I do think the cage is big enough, however, perhaps it would be easier for him to climb if the bar spacing was bigger? I'm only guessing here.

I'm fairly sure he is still adjusting to his new home, too.

He does have the clubbed foot but He has climbed to the top of the cage and around some of the sides, but he doesnt climb around to much.. he never did in his old cage either and that was normal 1 inch or so spacing. all he did in his old cage was sit on the ladder and barely moved except up and down the ladder because I put the water at the top and food at the bottom of ladder.

Should I move the food and water so he has to climb?

I would think keeping him semi active would be good for him, so he doesn't only sit in one and the same spot all day. Of course if you see he's having too much of a hard time getting to his food/water, then I'd move them close to where he is most comfortable.

Since he can't "hold" a toy and play with it, simple cardboard wedged in the cage may amuse him, because all he needs is his beak to shred it?

You Google flat perches and different ones are available from wood to stone.
