Today my husband took the day off, we rented an Excursion and drove four hours to pick up Buzz. I was warned only one person had handled him and in the daughters house where he was now there was no one who would even try.
It was an extremely tiny house with four barking dogs. He had three new faces staring at him, talking. He stepped up for me first try with only a tiny nip. He went in the carrier great. The cage fit perfectly in the back without having to disassemble it.
The trip home he sat with my son. They talked to each other the whole time. Two hours in he was taking seeds and fruit and letting my son scratch his head and neck and even touch his beak. When we got home and set up his cage again he stepped up for my son to get put back into his cage.
I have seen some feather plucking but hopefully we can keep him busy enough to distract him from that.
Those who know more can you tell, does he look like a CAG or TAG?

Congrats on your new Congo Grey. He's going to amaze you with all they are capable of doing and understanding. I hope you will both be very happy. Thank you for giving a well-deserving bird a wonderful new home.

Sounds like he is a well adjusted bird, and hopefully he just needs the attention that greys deserve to turn that bad habit around. We adopted a 15 year old plucker a couple of months ago. Every time I get frustrated with her or, her lack of progress, I tell myself "If I just adopted a special needs 5 year old little girl from Russia (doesn't speak my language), how would I be reacting right now?"

They truly are the other child you never had. Ours had only been home about 12 hours before she made the connection of where we kept our coats. As soon as we put our hand on the closet door, she would make a zipper sound and say "buh-bye!"

Six weeks later, she has come out of her shell like I couldn't even imagine. We just had her in for a vet re-check (first one was the day after we come home) the vet actually thinks she has potential to regrow her feathers, and has had some amazing suggestions for us. But most importantly, she is just amazing, and we love her something fierce, and I couldn't imagine a day without her. Challenges or not.

Just tonight, I had to go upstairs to take care of my 5 year old daughter, and Pippi is not used to the third floor and was a bit nervous. But she still kissed all the kids goodnight and said buh-bye to them when they said good night to her.

Good luck, but you won't regret it!

I suspect you now have a WONDERFUL addition to your home. His actions in the car seem to indicate (to me, at least) that he's happy with his new attention. We rescued a CAG about a year ago. While he had been well cared for, he hadn't had much personal attention, and he had consistently chewed all his feathers off for all of his 19 years in his previous home. Now, almost exactly 1 year later, with all the attention he gets (and he's not our sole bird - we have 9 rescued parrots in our flock), he has full, glorious plumage, and is a "poster child" for the perfectly-attired, well-adjusted CAG.

I suspect that with lots of love, attention, good food, and his new home, Buzz will be juuuust fine!

Reno before (absolutely no tail feathers at all, only down on his back, and a few assorted wing feathers), and after (a few days ago).
