Breeding Pineapple Green Cheeks

I forgot to answer the other part...lol...
Replace the eggs with the mother that is fixing to hatch that's why its important to write down dates when the egg was laid. Then when it gets closer to time you need to check the eggs carefully. I would start checking 5 days prior to hatch date. I've had a few that hatch way ahead of schedule. You can tell when the baby chick is breaking the shell and make peep peep noise. That is when you need to give it back to the mother before coming out of the shell. The shell must be fully intact! Basically just at the beginning of hatching is what im trying to say. Don't give her all the eggs, just the ones that is starting to hatch and trade them out with the fake ones. That way you can ensure their survival. Then the task of checking the chicks to make sure momma is feeding...

Breeding Suncheek Green Cheeks

Well Well Well, its been a long time Forum lol I cant believe my account is active and this post is still up. Something like 10 thousands views lol

Now.... The story continues. After this horrible round back in 2011 with the whole repeating of laying fertile eggs but eggs not hatching I gave up on Green Cheeks. Fast forward a couple years. A special Green Cheek that goes by the name of Suncheeks caught my eyes. It took me a while to aquire just one as they are very expensive and sell out fast. The colors are amazing and I knew that this would be my chance to redeem myself and Breed a pair of GC once again.

I spent 1000 bucks to get my hands on a Female Suncheek and a Male Dilute. By doing this I would save some money and hopefully get some of the babies to be Suncheeks. The Male that I purchased from a breeder is supposed to be split to Suncheek. Only time will tell what the babies will look like.

The pair has started to breed and I thought I would share this second journey with you guys :)

I will keep you posted as the story unfolds.

Just out of curiosity why are you so intent on breeding GCC?

Hello Mikey and welcome back!

I agree with owlet. If you don't know what went wrong last time, and gave up without dedicating the necessary time to figuring it out, how can you be sure the same thing won't happen here, with even more expensive birds? I don't breed but even I know it's an art that takes years to master.

In truth this has the distinct feel of impulsivity. Much less about the birds as your desire to scratch a temporary itch. For the sake of the birds I certainly wish you success.

You seem pretty impulsive about this whole breeding thing, back then and now. What is it that you are wanting to accomplish? Are you willing to pull the babies and place them in a brooder should the parents neglect or mutilate them? If you work full-time, it is not wise to breed birds as you may need to handfed. Have you taken these birds to your Avian vet? They don't look particularly healthy to me. What are you feeding them?

So I see some negativity among the ranks lol

Rest assure that I actually know what I am doing and back in 2010 when this post was first created I was just starting my bird breeding. For the last 3 years I have bred hundreds of Canaries and Hand fed Parrots from friends that also breed. I have more than enough experience to tackle Green Cheeks now otherwise I would have not waited this long to try again.

Now on to the update:

The pair is now breeding happily and we should see some eggs soon.

I didn't mean to come off as negative or start negativity, I was genuinely curious.

Hi Mikey,

It was an honest assessment of the information that was provided - not meant to be negative, just forthright and honest. Important where it comes to the lives of the animals we take into our charge. As a former/current participant, I"m sure yo uare aware of the caliber of questions that come through - sometimes the answers you want are not the answers you need ("no, young 15 year old, a greenwing macaw is not right for you right now")

Knowing you've taken to breeding in the interim casts your whole post in a very different light and context. It initially seemed like you abandoned the whole thing, only to find a novelty you want to try to pick up again.

Just a short update on what I am currently feeding for Breeding. Your advice is much appreciated.

I feed my birds year round with VITA SEED CONURE/LOVEBIRD. I purchase 3 25 pound bags at a time from Pupdaddy.com. I find the prices to be the lowest for this great Seed Mix that my parrots have always loved. I also find the free shipping great as well because these bags are heavy. The bags that they come with are all resealable which is nice. Total cost for 3 bags plus free shipping is only 124 bucks. I add a little bit of Nekton-E as well to this seed mix during the breeding season to give the birds a boost.

I setup a treat tray for them twice or three times a week. I put egg food, dried fruits and veggies, a couple of peanuts and a little millet. Then I sprinkle all the goodies with Avi Vita Gold. Amazing stuff and the birds like the taste when mixed in with treats. It has all the basic Vitamins the birds need.

I would like to start giving fresh fruits and veggies as well.

Any suggestions?

Darn it! I SOOOOOO want a pineapple green cheek! They are just soooo cute! I've been saying that for months. lol. It's never going to happen though. Not in my current living space. Maybe if I ever move to a bigger apartment it may be a possibility depending on where things are at with Skittles.
