Hello all. Found this through a search. Sooooooo happy to have done so. Waiting for my bluegold macaw to hatch & arrive at store where I can form a loving bond. Any suggestions on what to do in the fery begining? Also, do I choose to have flight feathers cut or leave them be & make sure they are on a leash when outside. ANY insight into what I need to do to have my macaw be friendly, affectionate, etc. I welcome all to give me sound advice on anything & everything. By the way, the name I picked out is Kiki.
Thanks in advance to all you wonderful caring bird parents.

The choice is yours to make to clip or not to clip. It's a controversial subject that many people will argue over. Depending on how Kiki is being clipped, some clip they're still able to fly! IF you can let the breeder know you would like Kiki to be adjusted having the leash on him/her, that would be a whole lot easier for you to train Kiki to do it later on.

To keep them friendly and affectionate depends on how you raise Kiki. There has to be a stopping point when they're doing something bad and you need to tell them no from the get go. Just give Kiki lots of love and proper training from the very beginning, you will go a long way!

I figuered clipping would be contiversl. Just like de-clawing a cat. Always thought itcwas a bad idea. Been reading & digesting a lot of material from here &;birdtrick.com. I also watched a few videos on clicker training.
As far as clipping I am leaning more towards not. I saw a video on the leash system. Looks like it works well.
Thanks for the helpful advice.:D

Mike's right..... As to the Womach brothers and their Birdtricks.com, when the started out they left a bad taste in a lot of peoples' mouths and I have not bothered to look since their early info (years ago) some people rave about their products, but I have seen better free videos on youtube than some of the stuff they sell, but, like I said some people will tell you they kike what they have to say, though I would caution anyone wanting to use their methods over others on the net..... They also publish a cookbook, though the last version I saw, they were pushing it as a cookbook of X-amount of pages, but those pages were single-sided, so you weren't really getting as much as you thought you were...and all of the recipes that I saw, were those of others that were already on the internet for free..... Now, in all honesty, I guess I shouldn't speak too loudly there, because I'm involved in a project that's collecting stories published on parrot groups and various other bird groups around the net and compiling them into E-books, but unlike them, we've got written permission of all of our authors..... There's a lot of good free information available, but then too, you have to learn to take much of what you read on webpages, with a grain of salt.....there is also a lot that has been taken from somewhere else, used what information fit their purpose, leaving skewed and/or flat wrong information..... Guess I need to shut up and bid you welcome to the forums.....hope you enjoy it.....
