For anyone interested in some other information about trying to save the spix macaw and the problems/ red tape that go with it, you should read the book called Spix's Macaw:The Race to Save the World's Rarest Bird. It's a great book that goes through the problems of trying to breed and reintroduce a species to their natural home.
Also I believe now there are over 250 Spix macaws in captivity. The largest groups being kept at some nature park in Saudi Arabia. These birds are believed to be illegally sold to the man who owns the park, but because they cannot prove it nothing can be done.
But again it's a great book that explains the fascination have with keeping birds and how the most affected four are the blues, Hyacinth, Lears, Glaucous(extinct) and the Spix
