Hey fellow parrot lovers just food for thought. I was undecided between buying a Blue Crown or a Hahns Macaw. So I researched and finally contacted my local breeder DJ Feathers. Well what Dave told me was bit of a suprise but also good news for me. He said that both birds are closely related and they ( I guess the people who classify bird species) are thinking of adding the Blue Crown as a mini-macaw. For the record I already knew that the word Conure actually means small macaw so I was not at all taken back. What I am happy about is that I will end up with a Blue Crown for $500 instead of coughing up $750 for a Hahns Macaw when both birds are relatively the same....Great! Peace Be To All.

$250 isnt a huge difference in price :p And there is always a difference between species. I would go with what is most appealing to you.

congrats on the new baby! i love blue crowns, it was a tie between a blue crown and a nanday for me, i got the nanday because of availability. will you post pictures when you get him :) ?

I've heard the same to be said for the golden conure, aka queen of bavaria conure. I think the patagonian conure might have, at one point in time, was considered a macaw?

I do know that there have been a few hybrids between macaws and conures...

Blue Crown x Hahns
Sun x Hahns
Nanday (and Jenday?) x Hahns
Mitred x Noble
Nanday x Illiger

And one that we have no proof of, but is assumed as this cross

Patagonian x B&G

It's not that the term "conure" means "mini macaw", but that "Aratinga" supposedly means "small macaw"... After all, many macaws are Ara.

As per The Handbook of Avian Hybrids of the World, it also lists the following hybrid

Illiger x Patagonian

Anyway, enough of that mumbo jumbo! Unless of course, it interests you! ;) Congrats on choosing a blue crown! You really couldn't have gone wrong with either species!!!

Yes I agree $250 is not a big difference. I dont mind spending $$$ on parrots but I always have to run it by the wifey and she lays down the law, lol. The only reason I was interested in the Hahns was that I was looking for the better talker of the two. The answer I got from the breeder was that there are both the same. Once I had laid a deposit down on a Panama Amazon and I went home told the wifey that the bird costs $1200 she went off and I ended up changing the deposit for my latest bird...Peaches the Sun Conure. Yes Artinga means small macaw. I like Blue Crowns more because they are not known to be nippy and bossy. My Snoopy the Senegal takes care of that already, lol. Yes I will post pictures. The BC will not be hatched til Spring so the waiting period for me begins. I dont mind in that time I can bond with my baby Sun. This morning the wifey and I were up around 5am shopping and the only place I wanted to go was Petsmart which opened their doors @ 7am. Sadly their were no big discounts for the bird dept but that did not stop me from shopping for my little fids. Peace to all.

My coworker has a Blue Crown and he's a big talker. She's had him for about 2 years, so he's roughly 6 years old, about the same age as my green cheek. He used to swear like a sailor! Now Connor pretty much just says "Asshole!" but he had very colorful language before! He also tells her chinchillas "Shut up Rabbit!!" since he used to live with rabbits. Oh! And he scares the crap our of her cat every time it creeps close to his cage.

Well I do not curse so that will not be a problem but I do have a 14 year old teenager that does so I will have to be careful, thankyou.

Congratulations on your decision! I got a baby Blue Crowned about a month ago and he is a super sweet and smart bird. He is really quiet too and only does a little bit of calling every day--maybe one of two "bakaws". He is an EXCELLENT talker and is picking up new words daily. He gets super excited when I get him out and he just talks and talks. You will love your Blue Crowned. The only problem that I am having with my bird is that he is a velcro bird with me in the evening. He wants me to pet him nonstop and it is kind of hard to devote an hour each night to petting a bird! He definitely prefers women (got him from a woman) and is very bonded to me, but he will go to everyone as long as I am not in the room. He seems to be very calm and gentle and only nipped once the first day we got him. We also have a Quaker and while she is super sweet too, the Blue Crowned is much less excitable it seems. Good luck waiting :)
