Birds Adopted From A Rescue

I did not get Smokey from a rescue but you could say I did rescue him from 2 homes , the first home where he was I believe mentally and maybe physically abused , for sure mentally abused and the second home he was totally ignored and lived in his cage with no attention and nothing to do but eat seeds and play with one toy night and day and he had plenty of time to pluck his feathers so he did and still does , not as bad as he was when we first got him but he is still plucking , he is such a sweet little guy and so layed back , I would love to email his first owner and say ty for destroying such a sweet and beautiful bird , it really makes me angry that some one can take such a nice bird and mentally destroy them
sorry just had to get my 2 cents in

I just got 2 birds from my local rescue I found here in Sac...
One is my own bird, the Jenday, the other is a foster, a moustache.

When I went to the ladys house, I was shocked at what I saw there...
She must have had close to 25/30 birds in her house, living room, dining room, bedrooms, outdoor aviary...

What really shocked me was this...
She kept up with EVERYTHING, AND has a full-time job...
The house was very clean, didnt smell, wasnt overly loud with screeching birds(yes it was loud at times in there).
Every bird had a bowl of pellets and good quality "parrot mix", and especially every single water bowl was clean with clean water(maybe she just changed them all right before I arrived but I doubt it...)

This lady could tell me the specific story and temperment and care requirements of every bird she had, and she didnt try to push any of them on me, she let the birds and I make our own choices.
Of course she did offer suggestions based on her knowledge of her birds and the things that I said...

She spends time with all her birds as much as she can, I think the ones that need it more get more, but all her birds were friendly and there were only 3 plucked birds.
ALL her birds seemed fairly well-socialized tho.

Anyways, I could go on and on about how great my rescue/adoption experience has been, she made it awesome for me and really peeked(sp) my interest in birds and helping her in any way I can(Im going this weekend to rebuild the sagging roof on her awesome aviary).
She even GAVE me a nice bigger cage for my seemingly ever expanding flock of Parakeets!

As some of you know from my own thread, I tried to go thru Mickaboo at first but soon lost interest in them and their processes and what they stand for...

I am VERY happy with my own experience, and I got a couple of really GREAT birds out of it.
I love my birds, they are both now my good friends and its like Ive had them since they hatched...
Even my parakeets are becoming more friendly and less scared after following her advice on flock-management.

And what really gets me, she never once asked me for a dime for anything, or made the process difficult in any sense of the word, and she is bringing me a nice big corner cage she has(she dont like corner cages) for my new bird room, its part of the trade to help her with her aviary roof, and gives me space for one more foster(I have my eye on her cute little plucked Hahns, he looks like a little chicken!!)

In other words, I found a bird rescue that i believe in and will enjoy being a part of, and even got a new human friend out of the deal!

Heres my rescued bird after only 3 weeks with me :)
(I think he is french;) )

Thanks for sharing [I would have been in awe with all those birds !]. I have 15 birds ,and I don't want people to think that I don't take care of them well with so many [I get up at 4:30].So its nice to hear about this lady. I have tried a rescue also .They have made it so hard [I ended up on craigslist]. Your Mustache is cute ;).I saw one in person once [their bigger than I thought.)

I've had great experiences here in Michigan! I have worked with 4 different no kill shelters/rescues for fur babies and a bird rescue.....can't give them as much praise as they deserve! What wonderful people with kind hearts! In fact, Feathered Friends of Michigan was on the Parrot Confidential that was shown on tv recently. Simba the blue & gold macaw was rescued from there! Hoping to adopt another rescue from them! They do awesome work!

We adopted our Mustache keet and our B&G Macaw from a rescue. Both are as sweet and sociable as can be.

Here is a little information about my wife and I adopting birds. About a year ago my wife wanted a bird so we checked the local classifieds in sound a Bared Eyed Cockatoo that was in need of a home. I honestly knew nothing about birds and did a ton of research.then one day we came across the bunch of people in a park with their birds out, Amazons, Macaws, everything you can imagine. They were a local bird organization that we immediately joined. We started fostering birds for them.

We fostered a Moluccan cockatoo, and was heartbroken when he was adopted out.

in October we went to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah, I live in Salt Lake so we had to leave at 3 a.m. To get there by 8 so we could spend the day with their birds. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill sanctuary for animals of all types, dogs, cats, horses you name it. Their adoption process was lengthy, we having experience with birds were allowed to adopt a beautiful Moluccan cockatoo male, another couple with no experience we're not allowed to adopt but they could foster for 4 months, and if that works they could adopt.

my Moluccan cockatoo is 30 years old with a slight blocking problem, but he is an awesome bird and I love him dearly, birds in sanctuaries do not get the best of care we all know that, but Best Friends Animal Sanctuary here in Utah does a fabulous job of taking care of their birds and other animals, and screening the people who are good matches with the birds in the selves, actually my bird picked me I did not pick him.

It depends on a particular rescue group - we have two very good reputable bird rescue centers in Chicagoland, and it's somewhat hard to adopt from them. But they have many volunteers and are working hard to give their birds the best possible care and life quality. They are very picky about the new owners.

Exactly.

I've seen great rescues that did fantastic work. I've seen hoarders that were beyond disgusting. And I've seen people use horrible situation birds to play on other people's sympathy and solicit donations... which they used not for the bird's welfare, but to line their own pockets, passing on the real work to "volunteers." (Who didn't volunteer long, once they figured it out.)

Thank you for creating this thread. I love birds but haven't had one consistently for years due to my job, meaning when my budgies and cockatiel passed I didn't bring in a bird till 2014. This is when Buddy, our Mexican Redhead joined our family. I've been looking at bringing another bird to our home but haven't done it yet. I REALLY would like to bring in a rescue, give a needy, loving bird a home. This is great info to gain, I would hate to feel like I have to or consider returning a bird.

If anyone knows of birds (or any animals for that matter) that are in hoarding situations and filthy conditions, PLEASE REPORT THEM! Humane society, police, ASPCA, USDA (yep they have some involvement in these types of cases), even the media. They need to be reported and inspected. Our society has a long way to go before animals have the rights they deserve, but please report it if you know of a hoarder treating birds badly!

I don't have experience with rescues, but I want to applaud your interest and research, and the good answers/support you're receiving here!
Good luck!

We adopted our BG from Wings of Love in Lexington. The - owner? - president? - started rescuing dogs, then someone asked her to take a parrot, and now they have maybe a dozen birds. Some are in cages (one evil macaw that will bite the nearest person if any man enters the room) but most were on top of their cages or on perches, talking to each other, begging for attention. The birds seemed to love her and her kids. The cages were clean and everyone had food and water. I think there are a couple of women who do most of the work, and they post photos and stories of all the birds on Facebook, including photos of the vet bills. They take the birds all the way to Louisville to an avian specialist vet. J did make some donations to them before we adopted, and we did pay an adoption fee, but that fee was less than one of that bird's vet bill. I thought it was a very transparent organization - I think they spend a lot of their own money on the birds, and do wonderful work with even the feather pluckers. They work to find good homes for their birds, because it means they have the resources to take in another. Our Gus had a decent start in life, though not a decent diet, and then spent 8 long years locked in a filthy cage in a dark room. Wouldn't you think a bird like that would be insane? And yet we were both scratching that sweetie's head 25 hours after bringing him home. Yea, he has had brief episodes of anxiety and he seems to miss his family, but tonight - this is Tuesday and we brought him home Saturday - he simply wallowed in scratching sessions and curled up in J's lap like a kitten. If that's not a good enough recommendation, I don't know what is. Anyone within driving distance of Lexington who is looking to adopt, you won't regret checking them out.

I have 2 birds that where rescues through the Aviary I deal with and both where very short in rescue before I got them I think the U2 was only in the store 2 days before I took him home. was give up due to noise no abuse, so he had no problems, and Ricky my Sun Conure was only at the store a day. now he is an educated fella he came from one of the dorms at OSU no need to ask why,ok I will tell you some dumb human. who had no idea how noisy Conures can be.

I don't have a contribution other than to thank everybody for the open and frank exchange of information. Sharing knowledge/opinions is power.
