Bird Talk Magazine Ceased Publication

This is very upsetting news. I've been a subscriber since the mid-80's (which was around the time the magazine got started). I feel so old now!

Just got the "subscription letter" They are subscribing us to Dog Talk????? Not what I paid for or wanted!!!!!

I received mine too....it's Dog Fancy LOL. Yes they sent subscription renewals to Bird Talk up until the last minute, which is bothering me as they must have known we wouldn't get them. I'm lucky I have a dog so I will enjoy the Dog Fancy. However, people who do not have a dog or are not interested in that magazine are losing their money.

Same here......Dog Talk......not what I wanted either.

I received the "dog fancy" post card yesterday as well. I do not want Dog Fancy and called the phone # on the front of the post card. I told them I had no interest in it, and she immediately said "No problem, we will cancel the subscription and send you a refund". The wait time was 10+ minutes, but the actual phone call took about 1 minute. I think they are expecting a lot to cancel.

And I found out yesterday I'm getting doubly screwed, as Fancy Publications isn't just shutting down Bird Talk, they're also stopping Aquarium Fish International Magazine. Still trying to make up my mind if I want to go with the Dog Fancy substitution they're signing subscribers up for, or just cancel as LauraT did. I don't have a dog, but do have birds and fish, so this is a major bummer!

They will certainly let us cancel our subscriptions, they were just hoping we'd be good with Dog Fancy so they could keep the money. I'm guessing they are teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. I thought I'd have a look at their other pubs and see if there was anything I wanted they will still publish, but if not I'll cancel. You can always cancel a subscription. I plan to do it online.

Just got off the phone with them, they were happy to try to switch me to Cat Fancy or cancel it if that switch isn't allowed. Can't do it online, I guess they took that down for fear of it being swamped or something.

Wow, that sucks! I've been reading that magazine since I was in grade school. :( Oh well, i guess it's to be expected.... the internet really has hurt a lot of publications.

Those that have managed to integrate the online experience and the print magazine experience seem to be doing the best.

I have mixed feelings about Bird Talk, it seemed as if it couldn't decide if it was a publication for adults or children and even the most informative articles were often written in an overly simplistic way. I did enjoy the kids section, but I wished the whole publication went much further into reporting current research and technical topics. But there really is nothing else in the US that fills that niche now.

I used to subscribe to Parrots, a UK-based publication. The subscription was a bit pricey, and some of the articles a bit too woo-woo for my taste, but in general I felt it hit the mark a bit closer than Bird Talk anyway.

This is BS!
I subscribed to the magazine 2 months ago.
You mean to tell me they did not know they were going to cease publication of the magazine!

Today I got a card from BirdTalk stating that my subscription would be converted to Dog Fancy, if I wanted Dog Fancy I would have subscribed to Dog Fancy.

I hate when companies do this to people. They had to know they were closing!

Yeah , I was notified the same way......nothing against Dog Fancy ,but....
I wonder why they cant publish a one of those EBooks ?
I would pay for two years .

Is it the BirdTalk magazine by BowTie, inc? I have contacts there on the book side, I might be able to find something out for you folks!

I host a radio show talking to authors of pet books for All Paws Pet Talk, and was talking to a publicist at Bowtie a day or so ago. She is working on getting me a book about a different species, but when we were chatting and she needed my email address, I asked her if she was a dog person, cat person or other pet person*, and it turns out she is a bird person herself, and has a female African Grey!

*I have email address for each of our websites, DogoftheDay.com and CatoftheDay.com as well as PetoftheDay.com - and finding out what pet the person on the other end of the phone prefers is often a good icebreaker!

That would be great !!!
My husband actually received a call from BowTie and they were interested in doing a article on the German Shepherd Dog tending chickens. ( Im not kidding folks )
and unfortunately we do not have any experience with our GSD and chickens.
Sheep , yes , chickens , no. So , we let that opportunity go but I did ask my hubby to question what the deal was with BirdTalk but of course , he forgot :(
I think we still have her name and number though , need to check the machine.
But , anyway we can get info on this very upsetting news of Bird Talk being no more would be wonderful !! Why can they do a ebook monthly ?
That would save money on printing , mailing , all that fun stuff......wouldnt it ?
I still can't believe we will be without this magazine !!! Its really upsetting when you look forward to it every month......it really really stinks :(

Please find out whatever you can !!

We are extremely disappointed that this magazine had to cease production.

Although I only scanned through it my wife went through it thoroughly.

I have nothing against Dogs but we are not dog owners and do not see us ever owning a dog again.

If you call you still should be able to get a refund.
Or maybe pick out another magazine you would be interested in.

Wifey called them in disgust. The automated reply gave the option of a refund, which she took.

I do not want dog fancy but at least I have dogs. I think I might get another parrot magazine.

I feel so bad for the people who make bird talk, although the web site is still up and running imagine how sad they all are. They couldn't even afford to make a last and final publication.
