Bird Harnesses

In my personal opinion harnesses are GREAT! They don't harm your bird if used correctly or restrict their movements, it's just like putting a harness on your dog. It keeps them safe, flighted and happy.

In my opinion you shouldn't need to clip a birds wings, flying is natural to a bird and they should be able to do it. Let me take away one of your legs and see how you fair, that's what your doing to a bird when you clip their wings. So a harness keeps your bird safe when out and about :)

I have 2 kinds of harnesses for my Scarlet Macaw, an Aviator harness for when we're just outside and a "Bird Diaper" harness from Jungle Wear Birdie Diaper's for when we're going into a building like a Pet Store or another home.

We use "Fredbird" harnesses recommended by our breeder, they work awesome but if you don't use it consistently with them they will not like putting it on after time is my experience. (that applies to any harness). ReaRea is the only one I'll take outside without one on, but that's just to the van and back into the house. Once in the van she is loose anyway.

I agree with Doves1 I right now have a birdie diaper for going to someone else's home, on a trip or in a pet store. But I will be purchasing a harness here soon cause Im letting Cooper's wings grow out. I think it is a good idea :)

I plan on clipping soon as I get my grey but after awhile I want to let the wings grow after I know I'll be able to catch it without too much trouble in the house.

There's a debate out there saying that african greys should not be clipped prior to 6 months in age, if not older. Clipping them too soon may lead to a bird with no confidence and freaks out at the slightest change. I don't know how much truth there is to this, but I know that a grey raised right can grow up to be a well rounded bird.

As far as harnesses? I've got three. Two Flight Harnesses, which actually got lost in the move a year ago, and an Aviator Harness. The Aviator Harness has better features, but I found that the Flight Harness was easier to put on.

Quick question to everyone here, I have the bird flight suit for Kippy have have been trying to introduce it to her for months and have thus far failed horribly. I am to the point where I am tempted to just sling it on her, regardless of her animosity towards it because it would open her world dramatically! I could take her out with me in a safe and comfortable way. She plays with the thing and is unafraid of it, she just does not want me to put it on her. Does anyone have any ideas how I can convince her that it does NOT make her tail feathers look big???

Try taking it a step at a time Pugtato. I introduced my Turtle Dove to a harness when she was 3 years old and she did the same thing, played with it and was not afraid of it but just didn't want it on her.

I started with letting her play (you've already done this) then I took it so I just put a foot in, let her get used to that, put 2 feet in, let her get used to it...ect ect ect....

Eventually your baby will get used to having it on, oh and every time you can get a part of the harness on give a treat or a head scratch and mainly just praise your bird.

Hey there all, i agree with the harness, i put one on my CAG every morning, then he can sit on my shoulder while i drive us to work. Once at work i remove it until its home time, then its just the reversal till we get home. He doesnt really like it, but he does accept it, he also nips me if i take too long when fitting it.

I have an AG and we have a harness for several month. Even though I work with her on the harness she won't let me put it on her:-(

I really like the aviator harness. I have tried the feather tether bird harness before with no luck, it has lots of metal pieces which made it hard to put on a parrot that never worn harness before, and it was kind of heavy.

Ozzie is now harness trained, and I'm planning to take him outside within this few days for the first time! He is now very happy to wear his harness and will not freak out or anything.

The only down side on the aviator was the pice that connects the leash and the harness was very easy to fell off. Ozzie was chewing on it (my bad, I wasn't looking while putting it on) and after about 5 second, it fell off! But it was super easy to fix, so nows all fine.

So just make sure that your parrot don't chew on the harness, otherwise it won't last very long!

I really want to buy some type of harness for Trixie. Being able to get it on her will be a whole other story. My hands will probably get bloodied up. I've been working on getting her to let me stretch her wings out gently (just in case she ever needs first aid) and touch her feet. However, she takes great offense to her wings being touched. She fluffs up and charges (beak open) and tells me off in "birdy" talk. So, instead I've backed down to only touching the outer primary flight feathers (for about 2 seconds) whenever she's perched on my fingers and stretching.

Right now she's learning how to fly indoors and building confidence as her flight feathers grow out. Teenage daughter rolled her eyes when I said, "Someday, Trixie's gonna fly like a boss", hehe.

BTW: Ozzie is sooo cute! Everytime I see his pic in your avi, I'm thinking "Awww"!.

Thank you :)

Have you tried taking Trixie away from her cage to tame her? I had the same problem with Ozzie before, he would not let me touch his wings whatsoever. He would bite my finger off if i tries to lift up his wing. And after I took him away from his cage, it really helped! He wasn't as aggressive, so I slowly trained him. And now I can touch his wings and lift them up anytime I want. :green2:
