Hi,

3 Months ago, I lost my sun conure :( I had just about given up hope when he was found and returned.

His behaviour has changed quite a bit - understandably, he is more timid than he used to be (although he is still very cuddly, he is a little reluctant to be scratched when not cuddling, and is not very keen for me to pick him up - I used to be able to pick him up most of the time), he has a few new calls and is being much less aggressive (he has lost weight, condition and been attacked, I assume he was living wild the entire time). We've had him back for 3 days now, and already he is acting happier, and eating very well.

I was just wondering whether anyone out there has also lost and then been reunited with their birds after a few months - did you notice many behaviour changes, and if so, as they recovered, did they keep the new behaviours and/or revert back?

I'm so happy to hear you got your baby back, and that your baby got you back. Sounds like he's had a rought and maybe traumatic time on there on his own, but is coming around. So keep at it with the love and hopefully he'll be back to himself. I would want to keep an eye out for a couple of monts or so for any kind of post traumatic behavior that might turn up or be lingering.

I love happy endings to scary stories.

I think changes in behaviour after being lost is inevetable. However, it sounds like he's happy to be back if he's eating well. Give him some time and be paitent. Sounds like he's had a bit of a knock bad and a shock to the system, but hopefully he'll come around.

So pleased you found him. :]

I would expect the experience would take time to get over!

I'm assuming he's banded and that you are sure beyond doubt this really is the bird that was lost!

I never lost one of my birds, but i had a ferret many years ago who ran away and was found much later. He also had been on his own, living 'wild' and appeared to have been in a fight, had a broken tooth, etc. When he first came home he was actually quite aggressive and nasty. It took him some time to tame down again. We brought him to the vet and made sure everything was ok with the teeth and everything else. He ultimately returned to his normal self and seemed happy and healthy again.
