Baby Eclectus Newbie Advice Help!

Did he show you how to properly hand feed so he doesn't aspirate? (If he actually hasn't already?)

Just taken him to the vets, he said he looked ok and couldn't hear any wheezing etc. just to keep an eye on him and if he shows signs like he did before (I showed him the video) to take him back for antibiotics. So just on the way him now and going to give him a feed and hopefully he'll take it as good as he did last night.

Wait, the vet you took him to only did a 'look-over' and listened to his breathing?

Blood should have been drawn, a cloacal swab should have been done, a fecal test, possibly even a ventral swab. Those 'samples' would require lab testing to rule out any unwanted 'nasties' your baby could possibly be harboring, and to rule out infection of some sorts.

He did a fecal test which was fine and asked me how I was feeding etc.

He's eaten perfectly again this morning (35ml).

What's with all of these vets lately who don't want to draw blood or do any tests?!? At least this guy did the fecal exam, but I just don't get the reluctance to do a thorough check-up. Smh.

I don't know but he's always been great with our animals and seems to know what he's talking about. He is an avian & chelonian specialist, and about an hours drive from us... I don't think any of the local vets would have dealt with many of any parrots, and he's the only one I know of reasonably close by.

If anyone recommends anyone we are based near Stansted airport.

Valentine (the bird) seems to be ok at the moment, just woken up after a little nap and is attempting to climb the bars of his cage, he's trying to pull himself up with his beak too (so cute). I'm so attached to him already! Any signs of any illness and he will be straight back to the vets.

Hi guys, just a quick update. He has been feeding fine since the problems on Wednesday and holding the food down every time. He is much louder again and seems to have perked up.

I'm still keeping a close eye on him but he seems to be doing a lot better :)

Thanks again for the help and advice!

Hey,

Valentine is doing well and eating fine etc, even picked up a bit of fruit and played with it in his mouth.

He's has put on weight and gone from 330g on Wednesday to 380g today :)

Thanks so much for the update. :) GREAT to hear that Valentine is doing so well! WOW, that's a big baby. :D

Valentine is a beautiful bird; glad he is doing better!

While I am amazed at the minimalistic stance taken by some breeders, thankfully you consulted with others and visited an avian specialist.

I only speak for myself: The "Bereavement" forum threads help illustrate the manifest concern for and love of these wonderful and innocent companion lives. There is much to learn from the misfortune of others.

Morning guys,

Quick update, Valentine is doing really well, he was 400g when I weighed him this morning before his feed! When I got him out of his cage yesterday he also flew to the sofa, I was so shocked, as I had seen him flapping his wings but not try to fly. It was such a cool sight and I felt really proud.

He is also picking up fruit and veg and seeds etc, not sure if he's actually eating any of it yet but its still good progress.

Cheers!

400 grams? And flying? Excellent! I'm so glad that Valentine is showing so much improvement. Make sure to keep exposing him to a large variety of veggies and fruits.

I say flying, it was about 6ft and was going almost as much downwards as across haha.

So Valentine has been feeding well every time now, and has been eating small bits of fruit and veg and seed etc, should I start reducing his feeds? He doesn't scream for feeds in the evening now. He only has a little bit of fluff left under his wings too, and seems pretty much fully feathered everywhere else... He is keen on trying to fly but weighs around 400g still. I don't want to rush anything but looks like he's well on his way to weaning.
