Oh, just what we need around here - another one of those crummy, uber cute Conures, hoggin' up all the PotM contests! An I foresee Broccoli garnering a few wins in the near future. All you 'keet and IRN owners - new sheriff in town, an his name is Broccoli!

It’s true; the amazons do all the work and the conures get all the credit!! Just ask Kirby!

Alright conure people, riddle me this: I am trying to save on this Pet Cord stuff because it’s $18/10ft, so what I did was I put the cover on the portion of the cable that ISN’T going to be under the splash mat. Is that sufficient? The splash mat is wrinkly and not very even so I don’t know if they’ll even want to go down there or chew it, but I guess food does fall on it as that’s it’s intended purpose.

The ding dang air filter has a ridiculously long cord, as does the fan. I could try tucking excess cabling under each unit if you guys think I should cover the whole length of the cord.

The security cam did get full coverage however as it’s on the wall:

I think what you have is probably fine at least for a starting point. I would leave it like that and if it becomes an issue you could always cover more of the cord. I know that Ona has never tried to get under rugs or blankets but I think it will vary with each bird.

The new cage arrived! Whew, it’s so freaking tall. I’m still getting used to it!!

Also, finished organizing my cables and bird proofing my desk (minus toys of course - need to get some good foot toys to keep her entertained so she’s not tempted by the cord covers!)

No fun pics of Broccoli today - today was grocery and laundry and house cleaning day, so I didn’t make it over to the shop. Tomorrow though, I am going to visit her in the morning before I go to a tattoo appointment at noon!

Nice set up! What are the dimensions of Broccoli's cage? Are you going to place the air purifier next to her cage? I have several of those Honeywell's and really like them. Conures aren't very dusty birds, are they? Budgies are a lot dustier than people think.

Nope, conures aren’t dusty, which is why we decided to get one. That’s the final spot for the filter there next to the cage! The cage is 32x20x64in!

I assume you put the plastic sheet on the floor to protect it but it looks like it will be difficult to keep plastic itself clean. Won't debris get trapped in the folds/wrinkles ma

It’s a washable splash mat! I love them. At the end of the day I roll the cages off them, carefully pick them up by the corners so all the debris rolls to the center, and shake them out in the yard. If they get poo or something I toss them in the wash. They’re really great!

I have a little usb charging hand vacuum to catch anything that falls under the mat. It makes clean up at night time a breeze.

I wonder if this would be easier to deal with than keeping the newspaper under Ona's play gym 🤔 I'll have to think about this! Thanks for sharing the tip.

I do something similar with cheap fabric shower curtains and it's been SO much easier to clean each day!

No photos of Count Broccula today but I visited her this morning and this afternoon, but didn’t let her out this afternoon as the baby sun conure and baby gold caps were enjoying the aviary and I didn’t want to ruin their fun. She’s so fiesty; she’d stare at me for a minute and then march over and when I didn’t open the door looked puzzled. She settled down and let me give her a few good scritches before I left.

The store just got the most incredibly sweet rock pebbler/regent parrot. She’s terrified as she’s new and a bit older than they were expecting but I got her to take millet from me, after which she started chatting at me! Ugh, baby birds are pure serotonin/dopamine. Broccoli was not as impressed as I was but is a happy enough little fella that he/she was content to play with toys until I came back over.

I am so excited for her to come home; should be in the next couple weeks. I was gonna let the store do her DNA test but they’re kind of slow about it as they wait until they have a batch, so I might just fork up the extra $25 to have the vet do it, lol.

Count Broccula has their first vet appointment on Monday, and if everything comes back good she’s going home with us!

Are you having the DNA test? It would be nice for you to know before calling Broccoli "he" or "she" becomes so ingrained its hard to switch.
I would love to have an indoor aviary like the one you visit Broccoli in someday so I can let my birds fly without having to supervise them. I just started letting one of my tame male budgies, Beau, out when Rocky's out so they can play together but it's much harder to keep track of two budgies flying around the room getting into trouble. But its so cute! Rocky and Beau get along great. Beau follows her around like a puppy dog and now I have two budgies climbing all over me!

Yep, but that takes about a week? The viral, CBC and fecals come back quicker.

The final touches on bird proofing are going in. Whatever dummy decided to put the HWH in a bedroom closet deserves to stub their toe - but I found a screen door zip cover that fit the alclove perfectly. Also finished putting cord protectors on the kids cables at their craft desk and replanted the herb garden/installed cord protectors.

The herb garden is so cool, but has to be restarted every so often as the root mass gets too big for the inside of the water reservoir. Hoping I don’t need to tape down the seed covers to keep Broccula from trying to taste them too early, haha!

I guess I will go ahead and tape them down! Maybe I should have just Saran wrapped the whole thing, lol!
