Anyone replaced a missing grate before?

I tired searching through forums to see if anyone else has already asked this question but I couldn't find anything.

I have a PreVue cage that is 12 by 12 with a playtop. I got it used (no worries, the cage was cleaned thoroughly). But of course there are parts missing. One being the grate at the bottom. Has anyone found a creative/cheap way to put in their own grate? I don't think you can buy grates by themselves. I was hoping you could buy something from a hardware store but it doesn't look like it.

Please any ideas are welcomed!

P.S. We need a grate in the cage cause are new baby keeps going to bottom of cage and eating its poop and prefers to eat food that has fallen down there.

With a baby you may try replacing the paper a couple times a day and just feeding in a shallow dish on the floor. Most young ones like to ground feed.

It's just a grated square right? If you can solder together metal of the right thickness and drill holes and sturdily criss-cross wire and then solder them into place you should be able to do it so long as the metal is bird safe.

finding replacement parts for cages is a challenge unto itself. I would rather try giving myself a DIY appendectomy while reading the instructions during a power failure with a rusty butter knife. Most cage manufacturers make it next to impossible to get replacement parks

Haha, yeah it looks that way. I was thinking of DIY grate since you can't order parts. ....well I wouldn't do it but I would ask my handyman dad :09:

I remove all of the grates in my cages....I find it gives the birds an extra couple of inches in the cages. I don't use them, and they are just sitting around.
I have black and white.

The only time I have been able to replace grates or trays is when I am lucky enough to come across a junk cage of the same type with the grate and or tray. I come across a lot of cages in rescue but still the odds are poor. Hopefully crimson can help!

Have you ever tried contacting the manufacturer of the cage? Sometimes they will sell replacement parts even if they don't list parts on their site.

If you have any bird stores around you, you can always ask them (or even ones online) if they can get replacement parts.

It's not easy to get replacement parts, especially if the cage have been around for awhile. Willie took off a nut and a holder thing for his feed door and I called the manufacture to get the replacement parts and they told me they no longer carry it. It was just two small parts and it was only like a couple of years since I bought the darn cage at that time.

I once looked for replacement parts for a HOEI cage, unfortunately, they aren't easy to get a hold of! I looked into getting parts from a different company, but that wasn't so easy, either... ended up not getting replacement parts and gave the cage away.

Thank you for offering!! I attached a pic of the cage and of course Zeus is on the bottom. Currently he is running back and forth sometimes running his beak against the bars...hoping that behavior will stop in time as long as we ignore it

I volunteer at a bird store every Sunday, and no luck there :\ But get a good deal on toys

I prefer not to have grates in my cages if I can help it, and often place paper on top of the bars when the grate is integral to keeping the cage closed---- Have you tried perhaps using aspen wood shavings down here? It's completely natural to forage and a good activity for the bird/s to do. They'll have lots of fun rooting around in the shavings for dropped food.
