I went to birdbreeder.com, and all of the breeders are upstate, some ship some don't. How safe is it for a bird to be shipped, is that a flag? Anywho, I was going to get the bird previously from someone on ebay classifieds, but for some reason I felt they weren't the type of "breeder" or even a breeder at all. They had different ads, and had quite a few different species for sale. I could be wrong, but don't bird breeders like to stick to one species, two the max? I dont know. I would like some insight. Anywho, I'm looking for a good green cheek breeder, I am in NYC, and would like to know if anyone has first hand experience from any of the NY bird breeders on birdbreeders.com? I am looking to purchase within a month.

Hey there, I am in Ct and breed Green Cheeks and Crimsons (only have 1 pair of each as I am a small hobby breeder :). I am usually on birdbreeders.com, but I won't have any babies until next year. Please ask away if you have any questions about babies or breeders in general, I don't know any in NY but can check into a breeder for you if you find one and wonder about their ethnic practices. Wish you luck into finding your baby :)

Hi. I haven't come across any gcc breeders lately besides what's on the breeder site. I recently saw a baby jenday, but on the fence since I've heard they are loudest. So i didn't contact the person until I get more info.

*waiting intently for the responses* I may be looking for a breeder in the future, too. I know my childhood bird was shipped via airplane, but never looked into the practice much beyond that. It doesn't SOUND fun.

It definitely doesn't sound fun to be shipped in a container, does it? However, I do believe it can be done well and made a safe journey by responsible breeders. I'd ask for references or ask here if people know anything about the breeder you are looking at.

Personally I haven't had to ship a bird yet, even though I do offer it. However, 5 of my birds were shipped to me. The crate is usually roomy and dark and supplied with a perch and food. Babies tend to be somewhat adaptable compared to adults and GCCs in general tend to fear nothing especially if well socialized. I haven't had any problems with those babies.

What to look for in a breeder: someone who knows a lot about the species he breeds and answers all your questions, has a clean environment and closed aviary, sends you pictures/videos of your baby and keeps you updated on his growth, socializes the babies, is available to you even after the sale and baby is home, offers you a guarantie on the baby.

* ANYBODY PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD TO THE LIST * (it's all I can think of now :))

I personally LOVE Hoobly.com, I find almost all of my birds there! Either there or Kijiji (now ebay classifieds, but I still type Kijiji.com because it's easier - takes you to the same place). I think more people use Hoobly though, and I would say 90% of them are breeders. Email some of them, if they sound like nice people, they probably are good, caring breeders. Ask about their background and stuff. Don't go for breeders that sound very pushy. But whatever you do, don't buy from sweetbabys (Suzie). She is a scam, and she sells to NY, NJ, PA, and CT. She scammed me of my money a long time ago, I lost $200. Otherwise just trust your instincts! Big lesson I learned. Suzie was always very pushy.

I also find birds on Craigslist sometimes. Just be careful on that site, sometimes you come across some very heartbreaking ads :(.

She told me she was going to deliver them, I paid her via money order to put a deposit down, she stopped talking to me and answering my emails/calls and I never got my bird :(.
