Parrots
Sam; Alexandrina
Hi my name is Catherine and I have just joined the parrot forum. The first forum I have ever joined. I am from the Far North Coast of NSW Australia. I have never been interested in keeping birds as pets but one day an Alexandrine flew into our back patio, and he approached me and has been with me ever since. Was unable to find owner and so kept him. I never thought that a parrot could be so amusing, affectionate and funny. I can now see why people want to keep parrots.

Hi forgot to mention that his name is Sam. Even though he is gentle with me and I can pat him and pick him up, he doesn't let anyone else in the family touch him but will sit on their shoulders. Is that normal. I also have a very beautiful gentle natured cross labrador dog. Sam hates him and is always giving him a hard time. Have to keep them seperatated as the bird will try to attack the dog. Do all Alexandrines have a mean streak like that.

Welcome to the forum. Parrots are fascinating creatures that make great pets. The only problem is that they can be addicting so be careful of that. Peace Be To You.

enjoy your new feathered friend. alexandrines are a beautiful and intelligent parrot. they pick up on things very quickly and if you use it alot when then they will wabt to play with it. my previous alex "phoenix" managed to chew buttons off my computer keyboards, remote controls etc etc. she had so many toys but wasnt interested in them, my new baby "oxy" sees me using my phone alot and as soon as i leave it unattended he starts chewing on the keys.

Thats pretty typical of birds :) A dog is a predatory animal, he is being smart by driving it away. Its a good idea to keep them separated anyway because you never know when an accident will happen. Also, birds will generally like someone better than everyone else... you are his mate :) Thats just bird nature, as long as he isnt hurting people.
