How is the punishment for these charges determined?

Unfortunately, the punishment will be next to nothing, as they are minors. This is a first offense for the primary suspect. He will most assuredly receive probation and his parents face fines. Hopefully, Ozzi's parents will sue.
You know, with criminals, the first crime is usually stealing, smoking pot, etcetera. If this is the suspect's first crime, what will be the next...a baby? This is a violent, predatory "first crime"!

Ugh. How disappointing. Now I understand why people turn to vigilantism. I doubt the owners will sue. They've already asked the public not to harass the murderers.

Probably under the advisement of their attorney. Once a conviction is filed, they can sue. They've most likely been advised to play it cool for now. But either way it won't bring the poor bird back. I've always been of the mindset that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and that the parents had a large role in shaping the sickness within this kid(s). I hope they all get sued. And truthfully, in my heart of hearts, I hope those sub-human filth are run over by a Mack truck.

I am happy to see the petition count go up during Father's Day weekend. Now over 15,000. Bumping so more people could know about Ozzi and through her suffering come to understand the impact this crime has to the avian community.

Hi Terry and thanks for this post. I went to this owner's fb page in memory of his bird and the pictures are pretty bad. (any dead animal pictures are but these are worse) I can't believe this happened in Alberta too! We have had quite a few cases of cats and dogs found tortured in the last year including a large dog fighting ring close to me who have been reportedly stealing dogs right out of yards. I recently learned what a "bait dog" is and it literally nauseates me to think of how that plays out. I read that a teenaged boy was caught and charged for torturing this parrot. Lets hope he gets the help he needs before he does this again!

Quick update for those who are still following Ozzi's story. The 15, 16 and 14 year olds are set to appear at the Youth Justice Court in Slave Lake, Alberta on June 25, 2014. The charges are theft, injuring/endangering an animal, and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Here is hoping that justice is served.

Just found this article that was printed on a newspaper. At least the petition site had a positive outcome by garnering the attention of the media.

i am glad that they are going to be punish t,but i really hate the last part of that article,it is pretty much calling the people hypocrites.

It seems to me that the person who wrote the article does not have a clue what being a parront means. Someone in the comments on there wrote a rebuttal comment that they are going to publish, it was quite good.
