Parrots
Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
...my poor little boy..:( I couldn't sleep last night so I stayed up on the computer watch You Tube vids and such. Around 4:30am I heard all sorts of thrashing and crashing coming from the living room.
I quickly got up with a flash light and little BB was banging himself around in his tidy bowl feeder ( for some reason he likes to sleep in there, maybe coz it's enclosed on three sides and he feels safe?)
So I shined the light not directly at him and talked softly and reassuring to him.
Opened up his front door and asked him to come to me. He stunbled around a bit, prolly still sleepy, and I coaxed him onto my fingers.
His hat was high in the sky and I cupped my hand around him gently, telling him I was here and every thing will be ok.
He was trembling a bit as I kissed his head and face reassuring him. He didn't budge or say a word or make a sound.
It took about five minutes before he took his hat off,as I was still loving on him.
He finally calmed down enough to put him back in his house as he said "BB good boy?"
I told him yes BB,you are a very good boy. He nodded back off in minutes.

I never had a fid that experienced these frights and it freaks me out :( when he has one..probably the fourth or fifth one that I KNOW of

sighhhhh

if you haven't got one try putting a night light in the room. More than anything it may help him realize where he is when he has a fright

Tends to be far less common with Amazons and much more so with Tiels!

With Amazons, it seems to be an issue of sleeping too deeply, sleeping with their head forward and/or their grip becomes lighter and they topple over. Normally, this can be helped with a larger diameter natural branch perch.

All Parrots seem to be effected by the shift of shadows! Hence, one of the reasons for sleeping rooms, cage covers, sleeping huts, and nightlights. It also supports our letting them know in a soft voice, when we are wandering around the house at night. 'If' they hear us, they may associate the shadow or crashing about with it just being us and not something preparing to kill them.

For whatever reason, Tiels seem to be more likely to suffer Night Flights.

As with other issues that come-up from time to time. Write it down and when the next CAV (avian vet) visit comes around, take your list with you!

One of our Amazons' first night had her crashing about her cage late into the night. I would go in make minor adjustments and comfort her, set her back in her cage and all would be well for a short while. Well, after several 'events' and while comforting her, I fell asleep in the recliner. Mrs. Boats found both of us there in the Morning. Let's say that Bond set in very early and she got a night perch in the bedroom. I am not recommending night perches nor a shared bedroom, but for her, it worked!

I could probably do that,M'Lord...as there is an electric outlet in the bookcase that his house is close to..thanks for the idea!

no problem Jim, I saw it on a couple other places. Tiels seem to be more prone to them than other birds, not sure why but I saw stuff saying that the night-light does help them out a bit and above all else helps avoid collisions

I believe one of my Tiels from my childhood days "Flo" suffered from night-frights. The problem is it would always set of her cage-mate "Cocky" My mum moved the cage to a part of the house without windows and it seemed to stop so the moving shadows thing seems to be part of it which is perfectly understandable

Have thankfully never had to deal with unexplainable night frights. Worst Kiwi gets is a ruffle of the feathers if something startles him at night. Hope a night light helps BB!

Yes April same thing with Amy..once in a great while I hear a ruffle also.

It may have been because I have been up all night, and this room is directly across from the living room the light was on in the room but the door wasn't completely closed..there is a recliner by the door way and his house is on the other side..i don't know maybe he did see a shadow.

OMG, there is going to be a huge number of people who are not going to get or even know about this old Radio Show reference:

"Only The Shadow Knows!"

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I know the shadow! I'm stuck trying to decide if this is good or bad for me considering I'm hitting my mid-twenties

Night light did help with Oliver the BFA's night frights. The one time he had a bad one - it turned out we had a small earthquake, one we didn't even feel, but he did.

Yaaa, he was more than likely listening to one of those 'Banded Radio Stations' parked on a small ship off-shore of England! They would play those old Radio Shows at night! Same as those off-shore of North America's East Coast!

It was actually my Grandfather haha! He liked to put it on whenever I used to stay over his house as we both quite liked it. Was always a fun thing to do in the evening

I have seen my Tiels go into that mode (fight/flight) not really there before.
I think it's part of their protection. when flight does not work the become very still.
Almost like playing dead. But it seams like there whole personality has "flown the coop" so to speak.

I always keep a light on for both my Tiels and my bigger birds.
