I have had my male ecky for 4 years got him as a baby and trained him to the smart (not nice) boy he is but for the past 6-7 months he has become a demon and I mean it he will be all lovey 1 second out of no where will bite and not gentle (blood/ripped skin) then will look at you like "oh hey mate what just happendšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø" my wife has named him bi-polar bird because of how fast he changes he will scream the house down but during the screaming will have a chat then back to screaming he has never been an outside bird has always lived inside i don't know what to do because on 1 hand he is my best bud but on the other how many more bites until I loose a finger or serious injury

Hi there, and welcome šŸ¤—

There are many great people owned by Ekkieā€™s on here.

I cannot comment on your specific Ekkie as I have no personal experience with him. Every bird can vary in personality. Some have stronger personalities than others.

I will however comment on mine! My male Ekkie can be hormonal. He tryā€™s to mate with me quite often (once a day give or take). He will bite my husband, and he will try to scare him away. Heā€™s an intruder, and my Ekkie makes it very well known of his dislike of anyone but who he considers to be his mate. Sometimes just the sight of my husband will set off our Ekkie, and he will waddle across the room as quickly as possible to attack.

On the way other end he treats me like Iā€™m a princess. He regurgitates for me as he would in nature for his mates. He really enjoys hanging out on my shoulder. He steps up for me, and I have yet to be bit by my Ekkie. He talks, does tricks, and is a great parrot to me. Heā€™s bonded to me for whatever reason, and has picked me to be his chosen human.

Parrots can be like this regardless of the species. Some are great with multiple people in the home, and some are one person birds. Itā€™s not a predictable situation. If you have another person interacting with your Ekkie maybe take over. You be the primary person that your Ekkie interacts with. You clean his cage, train with him, feed him, and such. I would highly recommend training with your Ekkie, and build a relationship that way.

This is a video on the beginning stages of training with a parrot. It truly is a good place to start.

My boy has just become like this too. He too is an inside companion.
He is just over 3 and usually brings his toys over to play lovely with us, Iā€™ve trained him over the years, so I can do his nails, weigh, he will spin, drop an item etc.
This week he has brought his toys over as usual, but then bitten both of us mid play, a strike out of the blue with no warning. (3 bad times in 3 days) He then screams and flies off. Yes causing skin damage bruising etc. I have to think itā€™s something to do with hormones and age. I have just ordered a parrot calmer spray we can get here. Fingers crossed it works.
Last week he was all cute and regurgitating for me, this week we canā€™t trust him. But he seems relatively content to be on his tree and climbing ball on his own and not be interacting with us. Though he screams out the window so we pull the curtain.
The only thing that has changed is hubby is off work for Christmas, yes he likes hubby too & plays toys with him too, but has bitten us both this week. maybe the fact he is here for a week is upsetting him, he has me alone more often than not. Maybe itā€™s the same for you too ?

Iā€™m sorry I couldnā€™t offer any better advice on how to ease the behaviour, Iā€™m still learning it myself being my first Ekkie, if you canā€™t get the parrot calming spray.. All I can suggest is keep the main yelling curtain shut, maybe try a pinch of lavender or chamomile in his food or a water/tea, Also reduce the fruit. or even to a lower sugar fruits like berries, red currants, crab apples & peaches. & only feed the fruit in the evening. I have found this helps a little. (He was screaming all October)
As for the recent biting, Solo seems to play for about 5 or 6 mins before biting, so Iā€™m going to keep any play to just a few mins then stop. This hopefully will not give him time to get into his bite emotion. And Iā€™m going to place more bells and chewing toys around his outside cage perches. also going to put him away for a couple of hours so he can nap in his cage about lunch time.

I just thought Iā€™d let you know, that hubby went back to work and he has become all gentle and regurgitation again, I mean instantly over night.. so itā€™s definitely when hubby is around.
He accepts him as a flock member and will fly to see him when he comes home, ask him to play, step up etc ..
but this Xmas he bit me 4 times.. one was when hubby approached to take my cup away & Solo was on my lap. So yep he definitely trying to bite me away from hubby. Oh well until next time hubby comes home šŸ˜³
