1st time mama to a 8 week old green cheek conure pinapple named coco

Given plenty of your loving attention coco will definitely be tame in time please let us know how the vet visit goes.

Yes,as far as the food goes, wean him off the seed. My BB loves those Nupreem fruity pellets that you showed, but I still give him 1/4 cup of special blend cockatiel seed I get from his breeder.
He and Amy eat "birdy muffin's" I bake when needed,he is starting to eat regular veggies and some fruit, but I find that baking the nuffins,he doesn't have a chance on ignoring the good things coz they are already nixed in.
If your little Coco is eating from your hand, thats a good time to introduce him to new things..a piece of broccoli, corn nibs, peas etc..and make a fuss about it! Make "MMMmmmm yummy Coco" sounds to encourage him to try things.
I agree he is a little young, and with you being a new Mama and all,you can use advice, thats why WE are here! :D
Plenty of people here who have conures and know a great deal about them.
"SunnyClover" (Desi) and "GaleriaGila" (Ms Gail) are just two parronts who come right to mind who are very well informed about Conures.
Don't feel awkward if you want to ask a question and think its dumb!! The only "dumb" question is the one not asked!!
We are all here to help guide you so that coco lives a long life and puts many :D :D :D on your face!
Thank you for joining our family, you won't regret it.
Please keep us updated on Coco's leg,I think he is young enough, that with the proper treatment form a Certified Avian Vet (CAV) I think there is a very good chance that he will be 100% soon!

Jim

Thanks Jim!
I'd be happy to answer any further questions...you can PM me.

On a more positive note, I like to think disabled parrots are the best ones to have! even if they did screw you out of money and they are at fault for this babies issues, you already said you fell in love and that's all that matters in the long run. He can still have a great life and even though he's disabled, I think he's still just adorable and I would haven taken him if just to make his life better.

My pineapple has a disability too, his bottom beak is split down the middle, so he actually has 3 beaks lol. It created a problem that he had to face, he faced it, he overcame it. He adjusted how he eats to accommodate the split beak and is better for it. he misses his target a lot but he just has to try again. He lets me clip his beak when it gets off center, and sometimes he gets his bottom beaks tangled the wrong way and he looks so silly when it happens and he just waits for me to check on him and when I see it, he lets me rearrange his beaks so he can eat and relax.

I just adopted a female ringneck and she has some missing parts of her toes on one foot. She limps a little and uses her strong hand for most stuff. When she has to perch on one foot to hold her food, she holds it with with deformed foot, sometimes having to find a grip that works since she is missing a claw or two. I say or two cause they all are kinda weird on her one foot.

My point is, coco needed a loving home, he got one and you rock!

☆☆So update ☆☆
We found a vet who took us in today. It's a vet that was very highly recommended... and best
CoCo is 76grams. She believes it is older than 8 weeks because the strength of the bite. She said at least 3 to 4 months old. But baby bird is a very strong flyer. Strong healthy heart. Also no twisted legs or feet. That was great news. She is thinking it may not have been like that very long but she cant really tell. Nothing is out of socket. One toe is kinda compisinating but she said just move it back. The splayed legs may not be able to be fixed all the way but she is hopeful it can be fixed at least some. She was super happy that coco was getting around as well as it is l. She also believes it will be having a long happy and healthy life.
We go back friday to see if there is any progress. She said stay strong and optimistic. When we go back friday she will work on biting vut right now first thing first and that's CoCo legs.
Prayers and wings crossed!!

This is great news! I’m so glad you found a CAV and Coco is mostly in great health. And I agree wholeheartedly with YUMGrinder-Coco needed your family. ❤️

Yay! That's awesome.

My personal opinion would be to see if you can return the cage or perhaps sell it and get either a flight cage or a critter nation cage. (personally, not a fan of the cage you have due to scroll work and legs)

HQ Flight Cage 32x21 - by My Bird Cage
13221 Sandstone - 32"x21"x63" Flight Cage & Stand

Outfit the cages with platform perches and ladders to make getting around easier. Fixing the legs is probably too late, unfortunately. It wont stop your little one from anything though!

I also wouldn't recommend clipping wings. (looks to be too late for that)

Food wise, I would recommend looking for a dye-free, sugar-free pellet. Harrison's, Roudybush and TOP's are often up there in recommendations. Be sure to include fresh foods, too! I prepare a sprout/chop mix for my own birds. The latest one is below.

good to hear you found a vet for her.

Personally I would give the breeder a call and tell them you're sending them the bill for the vet (what I would do) when selling the coco the breeder has not sold you what you paid for (which is a healthy newly weaned parrot) where your vet has reason to believe she is 4 months old and she has splayed leg (not healthy) so the breeder has no legal ground to stand on. You shouldn't be paying for a vet to help the splayed leg and you shouldn't have paid the same price that a bird without splay leg would cost

On a different note please take that happy hut out. Those things are death traps of the highest order, would be safer to leave a child with a loaded gun. They really don't need something like that to sleep, a perch or a hammock/trapeze toy is far better (my conure loved sleeping on his hammock toy most)

We took out the happy huts and have seagrass huts and toys and extra branches on order from amazon.

The vet actually gave us the fruit blend we were recommended in earlier post, we gave some to coco and it loves it.
And the vet did suggest to keep giving real fruit and veggies as big seeds as treats to help bond.

We will be ordering the different test for the sex and diseases.

The vet said right now the cage itself is fine for a couple weeks while we are trying to fix its legs which she is very hopeful it will fix at least some because she doesn't believe it's been like this since birth.[emoji846]

We cant return the cage. We definitely will be ordering a wide flight cage in the next two weeks from amazon.

Since the pic was taken, food dishes are at the bottom. Happy huts out. We have a pillow case on the bottom while its bandaged up to help grab as suggested by the vet. And lowered the ladder and everything.

Although I want to call and cuss the guy out and send him the Bill and take him to court. I'm just grateful I have this little bird in my life and that we saved him, as he would probably die if he was left with the guy. But I will be posting for buyers to beware.

good to hear all is going well. I would still post them the bill for the vet personally. With people who hurt birds their wallet is what needs to be damaged, if they lose money breeding a bird they're not likely going to want to breed more. But it comes down to your choice, I would definitely warn others of your experience

WOW!

I am so impressed and gratified by our wonderful members' responses.

tduane, I'm also thrilled at your open-mindedness and energy. You have had a rough time of it, and so has your bird, but I'm really hopeful that things can get better. It sounds as if your darling got a very lucky break when you found him!

I praise you for the way you're diving into this!

I'm glad you're here.

Which cage?
Or is there a better one from amazon?

Also best advice for where to buy or find the wood perches for inside the cage

Thank you so much. I am trying to learn and this baby threw me a curve ball. But we all will get there together. What doesn't break us makes us stronger. This birdie is so determined its inspiring.

either look okay but personally I would stick off amazon. I've heard of people receiving cages made of toxic materials before off of there. I'd rather walk into an old school mom and pop shop and buy one there (after seeing if any fids are hiding in the shop!)

not many of us do! I'm also very paranoid

Also you may meet a couple bird enthusiasts whilst you're out, there's nothing quite like knowing people in person with birds

This is them with that cage for only about 120 shipped. I’d jump on it myself if I needed it!

That's a great deal! Ugh! Wish I would have seen that before getting the latest cage that I have! LOL

Lol yeah it’s something we found out when working with the shelter helping adopters find cages!

Husband is ordering :) now

They are nice little flight cages! We have the same one setup for the budgies right now. I actually had my cockatoo in one temporarily when his cage was delayed and he came home early. So it has plenty of room. The only thing I’d pick up for it is replacement bowls. Either the hook on stainless steel or screw on stainless steel. The plastic hook on ones they come with are annoying and harder to sanitize but that’s just personal preference really:)
