My son and grandkids live in Charleston, WV, and there was a chemical leak there today that contaminated the water supply. They are not allowed to use water for anything except for flushing. The schools, restaurants and bars have been ordered to close until further notice.
A state of emergency has been declared and they are sending in more bottled water tomorrow as all the stores are sold out.
Luckily, my son is a coupon fanatic and has 50 liters of bottled water in his store room.
He has 10 kids, and they have been drinking the water all day because it wasn't announced until several hours after the spill.I'm just hoping they are all going to be okay. Please keep the folks there in your thoughts:)

Just saw the story on ABC news. There isn't any more water on the shelves of stores, people have scrambled to buy ice and juices, and now FEMA is involved to help with the water shortage. It's odd that they say the chemicals are not listed as toxic, but at the same time they're saying not even to bathe with it. Good thing your son has some water stored up. :)

Yikes! So happy for you and your son that he's got water saved up! I wonder how long the situation will take to resolve?

 Oh Terry, that is awful!! Did your son call the health department and tell them they had been drinking the water all day long?

He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers!!

I just saw that story on our company's interweb. Our office in WV is closed. That's terrible.

Oh no, I'm sorry that he is dealing with that (and you are worrying). I will keep you all in my thoughts.

I just heard from my son, and water arrived at the South Chas. rec center and was gone in minutes. The leak is still occurring, so heaven knows when this will be resolved.

Wendy, the health dept. knows as everyone in the affected area used the water all day before the alert came out. I am questioning why it took so many hours to be reported to these people. I am worried about long term affects from this:(
Thank you all for your kind words, I will keep you updated as I hear from Josh.

sorry to hear about this Terry. we are so dependant on our water. I hope your family stays well during this time!

we had a similar incident a few years back in Wiarton Ontario, apparently they were not treating the water they way they should have been. Hundreds of people died due to contamination. It went thru the courts for years, and new measures were put in place.

That is terrifying, Beth.
i just talked to my son and there is no timetable on when they can use their water. He is a server, and can't even go to work until they figure this out. i just spoke with my son, and one of the babies has diarrhea and his wife has a bad headache, but other than that they are okay for now. The ER there is packed with people who are scared. I am worried sick about them all.

can you ship them water?

We are so far away, I don't think that would work. If it comes down to it, my sister and her family are in KY so they could go there (5 hour drive). They are currently bringing in water from surrounding states. Josh still has some saved up, thank goodness.

Just checking to hear if all is still ok with your family. Not having access to water is an awful thing :(. What about people with babies?

Michelle, the water ban is still ongoing. FEMA has come in and they have been trucking in water all day from other states. Josh and his family are doing okay, and just praying for the best. As for the babies, I have been reading lots of posts from scared parents:(
I am hoping this ends soon, but they have no idea how long the cleanup will take. The chemical company who caused the spill has been ordered to cease and desist operations.

Those people must be going through hell emotionally physically and mentally
Your poor son, his children and his wife, I pray they are feeling better
I hope that Josh has enough water to see them through.
In my thoughts and prayers

So, this is my son's latest post on FB:
"So we are looking at several more days without water. They have to determine that the treated water is less than 1 PPM of MCHM before theyll begin the flushing process.. which is expected to take several days in and of itself. There will be no chance of work opening until that's finished, so I'm not sure what we are gonna do at this point.."

I am hoping that it will be over sooner than that, but it doesn't look promising. There was talk of the restaurant that he works in bringing in water so they could reopen. I really hope so.
