Pellets are something everyone has a opinion about, because of this I went around and found as many ingredients as I could and posted them all together on this thread. It will be a great place to compare ingredients and for people new to the world of parrots will be able to see what is available on the market.

Try to avoid pellets that have a lot of filler ingredients, artificial colors, ethoxyquin, bha/bht, salt, and sugar. Buy human grade pellets whenever possible. Also be aware that Vitamin K supplement has been banned in human food for toxicity.

Thanks :D I hope people really look at the ingredients, so many users on this forum will recommend non human grade filler pellets, even some vets recommend them which they shouldn't. Being able to see all the pellets together really shows us the difference, all I can say is that the ingredients speak for themselves.

Can someone do the Tropican series. I feed Valentino the High Performance Parrot sticks and there is a lifetime formula maintance parrot parrot food sticks. I could only find it in a freaking 20 POUND bag which will take Valentino a LONG time to eat up. I have most of it frozen in the freezer right now but I would like to know how this pellet compaires to Harrison's High Potency course which I mix in with the Tropican.

Thanks!!

To me personally the Goldenfeast Gold'n Obles sound fantastic, and I have mixed them under other Goldenfeast mixes, but boy, they ARE expensive. I regularly mix TOPS and Zupreem Natural under my Goldenfeast mixes though, and have no complaints. Still, I think I'll add a pound or so of the Goldn' Obles from now on and less of the Zupreem. :)

Additional Hagen Product Info Info

Due to our new extrusion operation at Hagen Industries, our Tropican sizes are a bit different. And, notably the Sticks and the Biscuits. These lots are just now coming to the US inventory.

The formulas, flavor & nutrient content, are the same high quality as before…in fact better. For about 10 years Hagen Pet Foods in NY had extruded our Tropican, in addition to our other extruded consumables (small animal), as well as the major tonnage for our Nutrience Dog & Cat Food products. The production of the smaller batches of pet foods in comparison to the dog & cat food was a production scheduling problem-and then it caused many delays in our inventory of Tropican products (and anything else with Tropican, such as Tropimix & Living World Premium Bird Seed Mixes).

Now that we’re producing the Tropican products right at Hagen Industries, we have smaller batches-all with laboratory testing and quality control lot testing at HARI, and the ingredients are sourced from local suppliers. This results in higher quality and higher standard of quality control, quicker testing time-as well as fresher to market objective that benefits our US customers. (and other countries). In fact, HARI has performed more tests lots since January than they did all last year!

I know that some birds are accustomed to eating a particular size and that perhaps this might be an adjustment to something “new” in the dish. My own pet birds, some of whom have been eating Tropican since 1993 were a little hesitant to dive right into the dish, but they did and still do. In fact, I have some Tropican Sticks produced in NY (notable with extraordinary holey texture) mixed in with the new production, and they prefer the new production. The newer Tropican results in much less powder and dust-therefore less waste.

I hope that helps explain the slightly new sizes of Tropican morsels.

Tropican has got to be the weirdest pellet I ever feed a parrot. Lupe told me it smells like...bubble gum?? (I can't smell so Lupe gets to smell everything for me to make sure it is still okay) I also have hard time finding approprate weights to order. Would like to buy it in 5 pound not 20 pound bags. This is what the breeder feed Valentino along with Harrison's high pot course so for now I am mixing them together. Valentino will eat both pellets but when fresh food if fed to him he will attack his salad. LOL. I got to get a video of his attacking his salad. Too funny what he does with the Spinach leaves.

Thanks Wendy :D

Since their ingredients list wasn't as specific I looked all over and found a parrot blog were they posted a more extensive list. Maybe we can only see the complete list on the bag itself for certain brands(maybe Vetafarm and Nutribird are like that too). I added one of these to the second post so they're all together.

Woohoo!! Go TOP!!! I love it because it doesn't have ground shelled peanuts like Harrison's and a couple other pellets. Thank you for all the information. Pretty cool to see the difference of ingredients in all the pellets. Awesome!!! And very useful!

I love TOPS too :D It's such a great brand! Unfortunately since I started giving Rosie Harrison's fine she leaves the TOP. I've tried giving her tops in the morning and Harrison's in the evening but she barely ate and in the evening she acted starved. I still add TOPS everyday but she leaves it, I mostly use it for mash, baking, and I grind it up and put it on her harrison's like a powder supplement :)

I feed Valentino a specific Tropican called high performance parrot stick which is a yellow pellet and not colorful like the normal diet. I have tried to find it available but only on Amazon in 20 pounds. I think the Tropican is a good pellet but just a pain for me to get a hold of for only one parrot. This is the pellet I will switch over the hand rearing too. Pulverize it up and mix with hot water and feed though the syringe for his nite time before bed comfort feeding. Valentino will take about 30 cc's then fly around the house like a freak THEN I can put him to bed. I have a weird parrot.

I wanted to get new video and pics of Valentino this weekend but Friday night Lupe took me to ER and I was in hospital until 5pm Saturday. The weekend was a bust. I am hoping for some time to film and take pics of Valentino this weekend.

What happened???? Are you all right???? OMG, that's some scary stuff...and you just ever so non-chalantly throw it in here...like no biggy

Great thread, thanks for all the info. I have been thinking of switching Bosley over to TOPS, he seems to be pretty tired of the pellet he is on Pretty Bird species specific. This info is great to have handy.

I'm sorry. I might of talked about it in another thread. I have bad asthma and with the weather being so cold and furnace running so much it is dry and cold here aggravating my asthma. I went in to doctor on Thursday and he wanted to admit me then but I just wanted to go home and use the added meds he gave me. Friday Lupe took me to the VA urgent care/ER and for the first time they admitted me. Normally they work to get my O2 stats up to 92 percent and with meds will go home. This time because the normal treatment for asthma counts for predisone a steroid which makes blood sugars rise so much I now have to take insulin pills to control blood sugars until I can stop taking the predisone. The steroid was making my blood sugars so high my vision was blurry and confusion and klutziness prevailed. Had to be hospitalized to stabilize all of that. Once the course of predisone is done my blood sugars should go back down and I should not have to take the insulin pills anymore. Pricking my fingers four times a day sucks. I also think the VA hospitalizes more often than normal ER's. I just didn't count on them admitting me Friday night. Screwed up my weekend plans and all my pets were not happy I didn't come back Friday night. Lupe had to hand feed Valentino and he was constantly looking for me calling out "Mamma? Mamma?"

I am sorry for I don't mean to hijack Copper's tread on Pellet ingredients. This is a very important thread to know what are IN those parrot pellets. There are so many types out there and sometimes it is hard to know which ones are the better ones to feed to our parrots. I have kept parrots for over 20 years and I still can get confused with which pellets are the best.

Great thread, thanks for all the info. I have been thinking of switching Bosley over to TOPS, he seems to be pretty tired of the pellet he is on Pretty Bird species specific. This info is great to have handy.
TOPS is great! I love the smell and it doesn't go bad nearly fast as Harrison's. It's also a amazing price considering the quality of food you are buying.
