clicker Training video of Rosie

I took a video of Rosie learning to put her wings up.

The first part of the video is her first session learning wings, then when the lighting changes that will be her third session. Each session was between 8-12 minutes and she is a pretty fast learner. I can't seem to get her to put her wings all the way out though, so I plan to change this trick from a full on spread wing to a bow.

I hope you enjoy it, I know a lot of people have questions about how to use a clicker so hopefully this helps with that.

Rosie is just too adorable! I love all the videos of her! She is doing a great job with wings, she's a very smart birdie. :) I would love to see more videos of her! :D :p

Thanks, I'll try to take more. I usually don't post them since I take them all with my iPhone and the quality isn't that great lol
 
Very cute! Although, I thought it would be better to teach "open wings" if you could catch the behavior in the act rather than 'forcing' it.. i.e. bird stretches wings, you immediately click and reward. It's not a behavior I've tried teaching yet, but when I see my mitred conure stretch his wings I often tell him "big wings!" and when he fluffs up and shakes his feathers I say "big feathers!".

Whenever Rosie stretches I say "pretty wings", I havn't rewarded it though as she does it very randomly and I'm not expecting it. I also taught her to put her wings up by touching her side as I tip my hand a little. tipping my hand back and forth was part of her therapy, i had to tip my hands back and forth without her wings opening or her grabbing on with her beak. I did capture many of her behaviors though, I taught her to nod, dance sideways, dance up and down, all by capturing her behaviors. I learned that method of wings from birdtricks, and so far I like it. If I can't get her to open completely I'm going to turn it into a bow.

Rosie is a very calm bird, most Galah's open their wings in excitement on a regular basis. Rosie on the other hand only opens her wings when she screams with excitement at night in her cage, but even that I have only seen her do 4 times and I have had her a little over a year and a half. She barely even touches her toys. When I train her she is very excited (notice in the video when I ask "are you ready") so it's more about her having fun then and stimulated rather then me showing her off to people. She loves when we go through all the tricks she's learned, and is unhappy if I havn't trained a lot her in a few days

If you could find that magic treat that Rosie likes and that she'd be willing to hop to you for it (i.e. a short distance that requires extending her wings, but not enough to actually fly), you might be able to capture the open wing behavior.

I know some owners have taught "Big Eagle" by dropping their hand down while the bird is perched on it, forcing the bird to open their wings - then trying to capture the behavior. Not necessarily something I'd recommend unless the bird enjoys doing that kind of behavior.
 
Any animals I have trained have mostly been trained on captured behaviour. Taking advantage of their particular skill set. I'd like to start training by manipulating but have been too lazy LOL
Mana isn't by any means a calm bird, but she rarely opens her wings upwards for stretches. And like Rosie, when she does its only when she is having a great big noisy happy dance and she certainly isnt in the mood for training LOL But unlike Rosie she does it probably two to three times a day LOL

So far all I have taught Mana is "come on" (step up/come to me), "Go back" (step off my hand) and "Foot" (she puts one foot loosely on my hand so I can clip her nails). I have been soooo lazy with her training lol.

She can't jump. One of her hips is healed on the edge of the socket, her knee cap is on the side of her leg, and the lower leg bone slid down over her foot. It has made it very hard to train her to recall since she has to go full out rather then hop like most birds would, she's been flying a little bit more on her own, so maybe she's getting close to flying when I call her(rather then peeping and begging for me to come and pick her up)


I may be able to try that, I have her trained to open her wings when I make her slightly off balance and touch her side. But I would rather she did it on her own then me having to to that.
 
I knew she had some foot and hip problems, but didn't know the full extent of them. Poor girl! You've obviously done well with her, as she's gorgeous!
