Pineapple Conure
:rainbow1:Hi Folks,

I have a young pineapple Conure I got from a licensed breeder. The bird is about 10-11 weeks and fully weaned. She lets you hold her and will not bite but I think she is nervous. Ive left her alone in her cage after briefly handling her and only used vocalizations to get her more comfortable. She hasn't eaten in a day, although she looks totally healthy. I have her current diet that the breeder gave to me and she has that in her cage as well as pellets and some fruit, but she seems uninterested. Ive heard of young birds freshly weaned that regress and need to be hand fed again. Is this true? And if so, at which steps should I take the necessary steps and attempt to hand feed her to make sure she receives proper nutrition.

Any help is appreciated

I would contact the breeder ASAP for some help with this. Birds can get very weak quickly from lack of food and water. She may seem fine now but if she truly isn't eating /drinking it could go south pretty fast.

Do you think she is eating when you're not looking? Check the bottom of the cage for crumbs. Also make sure she can see where the food bowl and water dish is in the cage. She might be disoriented by everything.

And yes , try hand feeding to make sure she eats something.maybe soak pellets in apple juice to make it more palatable.

The problem with most breeders is thst the moment the babies are weaned or supposedly weaned they push them out the door to unsuspecting parronts. I always make sure my babies are eating good on their own before allowing them to leave my home. With them not eating the first day is not unusual but on day two did you check the bottom of the cage. What exactly is his diet right now?

I am a parrot novice, so if I'm wrong I hope someone jumps in here and corrects me- but from reading I've done it's my understanding that birds, even fully adult birds, can starve to death in 48hrs. I would imagine that a baby could die in considerably less time then that.

If your baby truly hasn't eaten in a full day, that sounds really serious to me. I would call her breeder immediately. Maybe she isn't quite weaned and needs to go back there for a few more days? I'm sure your breeder would be able to tell you.

I hope the poor little baby is doing okay. Did you talk to an avian vet? They may have some suggestions

I would try hand feeding like some others have suggested here, birds can starve to death pretty fast I've heard, so you don't want to take a chance. My sun is over 5 months old and STILL hand feeding!(only one feeding a day now though lol) I didn't know babies could be weaned so early as 10-11 weeks old

I picked up my GCC at 4 months old from the breeder. At that time, she was still on soaked seeds and softened pellets. She didn't feed on dry seeds and dry pellets until she was 5 months old. I doubt your GCC can eat dry seeds and dry pellets at 10 - 11 weeks old. Seeds have to be soaked for 24 hours. Pellets can be moistened with juice or water just enough for him to eat in one meal at a time. If he eats only soaked seeds, then it is fine for now. Give him whatever works. When he is older and can eat dry food, then you can start him on better diet.
