Since I've had such a terrible time with raising day old chicks and having them die, this little one is doing great.....better!

It's been 48 hours since we started feeding him and I wanted to get your opinion on what u think he looks like.

I just have to mention this....Yolo would not have made it this far without me taking the good advice from MikeyTN. the live bacterial yoghurt has done wonders!
normally by now they have all died, but again some could have died for unknown reasons.

It's a long fall for those babies(4 feet drop) and by the time I get to them they are cold, and it doesn't take long for them to start to deteriorate.

some of it was probably my stupidity for not giving them the yoghurt. I don't know why I never did this sooner, I've never done this with my baby cockatiels or my lovebirds, never had to, but finches are so different, extremely delicate and so very very tiny!!! now if I have to feed any other day old chicks regardless of what they are they are getting yoghurt....I can't believe I didn't do this sooner:eek::eek::eek:

all I can say is I am getting excited!! I am trying not to be given what has happened in the past, but I can't help myself.

my daughter Sarah named him YOLO(You Only Live Once)
I truly love the name, I think it's very positive and up beat, and fitting too;)the white liquid in his mouth was from the feeding formula

here is YOLO :D

It looks like he's growing pretty good! I hope he continues to grow like he's doing now. ;)

do I need to give him more yoghurt at any other time, or just the once in the beginning? you know when the parents feed their chicks, every feeding they get more and more bacteria from the parents, this is why I was asking.

your right he has grown a bit.keeping my toes and fingers crossed that he continues to do well and thrive.:D

Just the first time is when you needed to give the yogurt to start the bacteria process. The first 3-4 days is the important time, after that time have passed you should be in the safe if you just kept on doing what you've been doing. If this little guy makes it, you should keep him cause he would be a very friendly finch!!! They're trainable like parrots. :)

I am definitely going to keep him no matter what, if he continues the way he is. I have always wanted a friendly finch! :) :)

All I can say is I owe it all to mikey for a great suggestion with the live bacteria yoghurt.
It's really made a world of difference.:) :) :)

Yolo died this morning :( :( :(
when I didn't hear his little peeps I dreaded opening up the lid.
I noticed a 'bubble' on the side of his crop for the past two days, and thought it was unusual, but there was nothing I could do about it.

he was still hungry and acting normally. oh boy, now I now why I'm done with gouldians.

well, thank you everyone for all your positive thoughts. now I just have to go and check on Puffs. this day just sucks.

Oh no! I'm *so* sorry! After everything you did and all the love and hope you put into his little life - I think we all thought Yolo would live on. Poor little baby. Still, you did your absolute best for him and he felt the love, I'm sure. Sending extra healing thoughts to you tonight, Beth. Be kind to yourself! XXX

thanks Trish, I tried not to get ahead of myself with this. the odds are just too great for them not to survive.

parrots are completely different to feed at that age. They typically survive.
you know I fed him 10x's per day, couldn't really go very far cause I had to be back to feed him.
I'm ok, I kept things in perspective knowing there was a good chance he wouldn't make it, but the tears just keep coming.

Ohhhh that's so sad :(. Sorry ....

I'm so sorry to hear about YOLO! Sending lots of hugs your way. :(

I'm sorry to hear about Yolo's passing....usually with bubbles in the crop sac means there's sour crop, infection, etc. With a baby that small it would be hard to treat or even do a crop wash. You did your best for little Yolo... :(
