Hi everyone! We are new to this forum! I own since 2 weeks what it seems to be an yellow (or double yellow) headed Amazon. I'm in Mexico and these birds are sold very cheap here and are sold even on the streets. I bought him (or her) because it was sick, in poor conditions and malnourished. I'll save you all the sad first pictures of him/her the first day but well I have some experience in breeding lovebirds, budgies and cockatiels, and brought it to the avian vet to check him/her up and got his/her meds. However I have 0 experience with birds this big and therefore I'm searching information about big baby chicks, specifically about amazons. Sadly I can't find a lot info like with the smaller and more common birds, only the basics. So if you know where I can find a big thread about them I'll forever thankful, as I looking forward to give him/her the best life as I can.

Nawwwww... what a little sweetheart this baby is. SO much cute in such a tiny package:D So glad he/she has landed safely in your home and is seeing an avian vet! I have no experience with baby birds, but I will say amazons are awesome large parrots! Don't be intimidated by their size at all, they make wonderful, faithful companions and are hilarious once old enough to play and explore/get into trouble. Can get a tad hormonal at puberty (4-6 years of age) and during the breeding season as adults, but if you raise this baby right, any 'disagreeable' hormonal behavior will be offset by the bond you'll develop with time. Please keep us updated at the little one's progress as there is a huge amazon following on this forum who love watching baby zons grow up and let us know what you decide on as a name! Also, read these 2 threads about amazons. Very useful/insightful information for a first time amazon owner! Better yet, read the threads out loud in a soothing tone of voice to the baby as it is a classic technique to build trust with a parrot and set the foundation for a lifelong relationship:

Go to our sub forum on breeding/raising parrots- it will have a lot of useful information. Please do this NOW. Baby parrots need tobe fed 4-5 times a day with special baby parrot formula. You need a thermometer tomake sure the formula is no hotter than 102 deg F. A syringe to feed her or a small spoon with the edges bent up to spoon feed her. Many many other things can be found there. Please let usknow how you two make out. Now that you have our attention you have to do this. The next week is critical! Muy importante' .

Welcome to Parrot Forums and the Wonderful World of Amazons! The above Post real defines the Joy of Loving and Living with Amazons! Developing a Trust Bond is so very important with Amazons. It is also important to their social skills with other members of your family and early to avoid the single person relationship that Amazons can easily form if not socialized.

Your baby has 'bone' (clear) color Beak, which is a standard with Double Yellow-headed Amazons. But appears to have dark color toe nails. DYH Amazon have 'bone' (clear) color toe tails. Let us know, which is true for your baby.

Possible Amazon: Yellow Crown Amazon. It is very important to understand that very young Amazon can change their feather colors between this age and about two years of age with some Amazon not providing full Adult colors until they are in their teens.

Note: Base Amazon Body Language begin to be seen between one and three years of age. But is very good to know their language so when they begin using it, you will know what they are communicating with you.

Welcome aboard! :D you and I are practically on the same boat, I recently found a pair of Racket tail chicks. Good luck with your baby! She's beautiful!

I will note that even with the dark toes, it is still very possible that your baby is a double yellow head. I was trying to think, so I resorted to going back and looking at pictures, and my baby had dark toes when he was younger that lightened up to bone color around 3-4 months of age.

Awe, he's adorable...

I'm assuming that you know all about proper hand-feeding formula temperatures, feeding times, formula consistency, etc. Just making sure, as it can be tricky, and I don't know your experience level with hand-feeding/raising chicks...

Seeing as he's in Mexico, and I agree he was very fortunate to have found you, so Lucky is a great name...so, perhaps "Suerte"?
