I thought they were gonna go over it in a barrel or something... Just sitting there in the water trying to avoid getting sucked over?! While waving at the other folks, look at us, we're trying to avoid getting sucked over the falls...

Every year it seems someone does something like this in Yosemite, and gets sucked over the falls.

Well, that was a bit anti-climatic. I thought they were going to bungee jump off it or something. We did some cliff diving into the ocean in Jamaica off some pretty high cliffs and some of my friends and I did some other "dangerous" activities when I was in high school involving an old quarry/mine (not going to give any younger members any ideas, but it was an incredibly stupid thing to do). I think I'm all done with terrifying, potentially deadly water-related activities for my lifetime though and probably would not care to swim up to the edge of a waterfall or anything else involving a waterfall besides look at it from a safe distance.

Anyone remember the old stories though of people going over Niagra Falls in barrels? Imagine going over THAt in a barrel?!

I have to agree with Birdman666, I don't quite get it, wrong kind of risk! And this is coming from someone who used to do a trapeze act, 80 feet up, no net!

That is too shallow to make it in a barrel. You can theoretically do it at Niagra, because it's deep enough. Why you would want to, again, escapes me... (Of course, you will be immediately arrested should you survive.)

As for potentially deadly water sports, my back no longer tolerates the kind of pounding you take in surfing (nor am I in "surfing shape" anymore), but I was a California surfer boy from 7th grade up until my early to mid 40's. Roughly 25+ years....

That's the only sort of "over the falls" activity I've done. If I fall off... and get sucked over.

We did some cliff diving in Mexico. It's kinda fun. Just remember to jump OUT away from the cliff, NOT straight down.

I had a race modified VXR at one time. I used to go open ocean Jet Skiing... and in SF, open ocean is pretty big water. We got pretty good sized swells. Especially in the winter. And you can catch and ride those big open ocean swells on a jet ski... The potato patch on a big day, on a jet ski, is REALLY FUN! (Not so much in a regular boat.)

The Bay Area is in the Red Triangle. The great white's feed out at the Farrallon Islands, and Ano Nuevo. Seal breeding grounds = Shark feeding grounds.

UMMM.... Sharks and dolphins, even though they don't get along, often work together when feeding. The dolphins get the fish at the top of the water. When the fish swim down? They find the sharks waiting for them. (And they panic and go up, to find the dolphins waiting for them.) So, the presence of dolphins DOES NOT mean there aren't sharks present. That is a myth...

You just can't necessarily see the sharks cuz they are not at the surface. But since they are busy feeding, and staying deep to stay away from the dolphins, the only time it's life threatening is if you suddenly dive in and are mistaken for a funny looking seal...

Now if the sharks hit a dolphin, the entire pod has been known to go after them... BUT... they do cooperate with one another during feeding.

Twenty five plus years of surfing...

You can ride waves on a jet ski that you could never in a million years ride on a surfboard, and in the open ocean, you can catch the swells before they break and carve them up without serious risk of death... (i.e. Mavericks!)

It was not uncommon to have 18 Foot seas in the fall and winter in NorCal. Triple overhead!!! Which is serious fun on a jet ski, that was super maneuverable, and had enough speed to get out of the way if you ran into trouble. There was a time when I was more at home in the ocean than on land... but that was a long, long time ago...

I actually killed the jet ski in the middle of SF Bay. The Alcatraz Ferry throws a huge boat wake. A huge boat wake = Big Air on a jet ski... LANDED TOO HARD! My ride plate bent into the prop box. Dead ski. Middle of the dang bay. Fortunately it was an incoming tide, so I just tied the ski off to my waist and sidestroked it in... Took about 45 minutes. If you've ever seen a rapidly incoming tide in SF, you'd understand. You aim for the Emeryville Marina, and just let the ocean do most of the work.

I board surfed Mavericks exactly once. Didn't make the drop. Snapped my board in half... spent 45 minutes in the impact zone, and took a trip through "the boneyards." Never went back. Lost my desire for true big wave surfing. Never board surfed anything much above 12 feet after that. Took me two years to go out in size again... IT WAS THAT BAD AN EXPERIENCE.

Up until then, this is what I lived for!

(But then, I hadn't been introduced to skydiving yet!)

I was actually out at Rockaway, the day professional surfer Mark Foo got killed at Mavericks. It was only about 12-15 feet at Rockaway. Mav's was twice that size on the sets. Probably 25 feet consistently with bigger "outside" sets... We drove by it after surfing that day.

It was a very sobering day for a lot of us... when someone with that skill set dies... who am I to be messing with this stuff?!

Off topic, but yay a fellow circus lover!! I did some beginner trapeze lessons plus aerial silks and circeau last year My husband's best friend is a professional performer here and a coach.

Isn't it amazing to feel so exhilarated while looking so peaceful? I miss my classes so much

My VXR would do about 42 mph flat out. Which was greased lighting for a ski back in the day. Now, of course, they've got stock skiis that will toast that speed... The VXR was a sit down (way more stable in big water!), but you definitely didn't dare sit down in the open ocean. Your butt would be driven up into your adams apple by the chop at any kind of speed...

The game was to carve huge, football field sized turns on these open ocean swells... And of course, catching air, flying out of them.

Old school stand ups are fine for the lakes. Open ocean?! I wouldn't advise taking one of those out there... unless you took it off a boat, that was close enough to come get you if you got into trouble.

AND I'D LIKE TO COMBINE WING WALKING AND SKYDIVING... BY HITTING THE RELEASE MECHANISM AT THE TOP OF THE LOOP, AT THE END OF THE AEROBATIC ROUTINE...

Cut away at the top and have the plane finish the loop beneath me in free fall! (I've got an air show fantasy routine in my head... that would be fun! All I need now is, a plane, the pilot, FAA certification, and oh, yeah, an air show to hire me... which means insurance... Can't get insurance for that stunt... can't let you do it. Doh!)

Definitely getting Photos and Video of that one, and it's definitely going up on my "aerial adventures" wall... (Yeah. I have a wall!)
