I posted this somewhere else but I felt like this is important enough for a thread. If I get a Sun Conure would it screech more or less (after quarantine period -thanks MonicaMc) if in the same cage as Chico. I do want the bird to bond with me more than Chico I want another friend not a friend for my bird.

P.S. I have no intention of allowing them to breed.

Thanks.

It is never a good idea to house birds in the same cage. Fights happen fast and hook bills do a lot of damage. Suns are loud, no mater where they are. They are also playful and funny so being loud is a trade off.

Yes, they do screech. The YouTube videos that show Suns screaming don't do those birds justice by any means, lol. They're much, much louder than that.

yes, and they can be hard to stop once they start

i dont think my sun is all that loud personally. Yes he can scream when happy, startled, am pm, or sometimes outta the blue for no apparent reason. Id say out of the entire day he screams/talks for maybe 10 minutes. Its really no big deal to me. I also think a parakeet is much more annoying as they never shut up. The cockatoo and cag are loud enough to make your ears bleed. I literally sometimes cover my ears when they sound off at my wifes parents house. I like the suns as they are not an ugly bird or plain bird like the green cheeks and cockateils, medium size, smart, beautiful looking, and have a great sense of humor. Everyone told me to get a gc as they are smaller and quiter. Im very thankful i didnt listen to them as i wouldnt trade our sun for any other bird. Hes been a great bird so far. If you dont like noise get a fishtank imho. My vote is get the sun and keep in different cages as they are awesome birds

I fostered a Nanday conure for a time (similar to Suns, I think). Her screech was LOUD but less frequent.

I would also recommend housing them separately. The Nanday and my rose-crown (GCC-sized conure) got into it and the little guy's beak was cracked. Not bad, and it grew out, no symptoms or apparent pain or bleeding, but still. They were not in the same cage, it happened outside the cage. Once they are lovey together and don't fight then it might be okay.

I could never get a sun conure, no matter how beautiful they are that a reach is so harsh and hurts the ear. I would keep the birds in seperate cages, especially considering the size difference. Adult birds are full of hormones, and sometimes they just need their own space.

1. Loud is a relative concept. I have a Greenwing. When she goes off, the whole neighborhood knows about it.

2. You never know with pair bond birds, who they will become attached to. If it's you, and they get jealous of the attention you pay to that other bird, they could attack the other bird. Conversely, if they get attached to the other bird, they could get jealous of the attention you pay to the other bird, and then start attacking you...

3. One one pair bond bird in a pair bond attacks, they often both do. I've seen them turn on people. It can and does happen.

4. Housing in the same cage, (a) depends on the size of the cage, and (b) depends on the bird. I've had bonded conures that COULD NOT be kept in separate cages. I've also seen conures pick on each other. So this is very much hit and miss...

5. A Sun Conure will screech when he does. Suns tend to be "line of sight screamers." If their needs are met, and a routine is established then it shouldn't be too bad. If their needs are not met, or they have "conure spoiled bird syndrome" they will scream incessantly for everything... THAT is more a training thing, and it is as much a train the humans thing as it is a train the bird thing.
