Working

I have two ekkies and work a full time job. Both of my birds are very well adjusted and happy, so it is definitely possible.

The important thing is to be dedicated in the time spent with them each day. On average, you should be able to spend a few hours a day with them. This includes direct interaction such as training or reading to them, and less direct time spent such as having them hang with you as you watch tv, or do chores around the house.

So long as you give them time with you that they can depend on, and provide lots of stimulating activities for the in the cage while you're gone, it is very possible to give your birds a happy, healthy life even with a full time job.

I work a lot--up until a month ago I had 3 jobs, now Im down to 2. Im frequently not home for 10-12 hours, but my husband has a more flexible schedule. He doesnt interact with Wrangler but he will frequently let him out of his cage to hang out on top. My husband pretty much lives upstairs in his office/man cave, so being out is still "alone time" for Wrangler, and he likes his cage so it's not a hardship for him to be in it. As others have said, the size of the cage and how you provide for your birds entertainment are key

Wrangler has always been in a situatuion where he was not the only bird, until I got him in June. He has bonded very strongly to me (possibly TOO much) and I am considering another bird to give him some companionship and increase his social independance. They may not be best buddies, but hopefully having another flock member will increase his daily stimulus when Im not around. Right now Im his sole source of interaction. When Im home, he's out---that's the easy part. But like you, I worry about his health when Im not around--and we'll be testing that this month when we take a 2 week trip away--without the fids. Lots of healthy birds with working parronts out there, and good on you for your concerns---but let your bird tell you what he needs.
