Woody - Shamrock Macaw

So, yeah, if he tried?! I wouldn't have a finger...

With that much strength and bite pressure (and untrained birds out there) it's a wonder we don't hear of more occurrences of people missing fingers from large Macs... :52:

Honestly, he reached out and grabbed my finger, squeezed it too hard, and it just exploded... and that's what it felt like at the time. Lots of pressure, and then blood everywhere. He never meant to hurt me, it was an emotionally needy bird saying "Don't leave me!"

The SEVERE on the other hand, was pissed off at the world, and as evil as these things get. I got distracted for a moment AND THE EXACT SECOND I TOOK MY EYES OFF HIM he deliberately sliced my thumb open with that sharp pointy beak...

That wasn't a bite pressure thing at all. That was an incision... Not much pain, just a gusher! That bird absolutely meant to do it, and it was effortless... He was a little green ball of hatred when I started working with him. (I was the ball of hatred when I finished working with him!) :D

Ah! Happened upon this thread while looking up information about Shamrocks before I brought one home. The one we purchased is as sweet as they come, and I can't wait to bring her home. A shamrock is a hybrid between a Scarlet and a Military Macaw :) a greenwing/military would be a calico

He's beautiful!!!

oh wow, woody is beautiful! Amazing boy!
but now Monster may be a shamrock too!
his feathers are a little (ok a lot) shabby, but i am going to get pics of him up sometime this week so everyone can play guess the hybrid!
woody looks like such a sweet mac!

Really?!

How do you get the red on the facial feathers then? Woody had thick facial feathers that were half red and half black. So I always assumed this was GW/Military.

And his personality was dominant male GW.

I think the Scarlet would give it the red color, as they're really similar to Greenwings, but they have a yellow stripe on their wing. I'm no pro with macaws at all, but since adopting Quinn, I did a lot of research. There's extensive hybrid information here and more about the Shamrock here and here.

As for the personality deal I'm unsure, but there's always exceptions to every breed!

And yes I'd love to see a pic of Monster :)

Regular bathing will fix that in no time... that just screams neglect!

If you see a scarlet they will look like they don't have facial feathers because their facial feathers are white. (What feathers they do have)

I was interpreting facial as for head(?) Feathers? Haha, I understand now. Like I said, I'm still new to bird world. The facial feathers would be on their cheeks(?) then, right?

Thanks! Then I wonder how it got the red facial feathers, are you sure its a Shamrock birdman?

I was told it was.

But it got the red facial feathers because the dominant bird in that pair was a Greenwing! That bird had A LOT of GW characteristics... So what ever they are calling a GW/Military mix... I was told it was a Shamrock.

He was an attention oriented love everyone goofball!

Just don't pay attention to anyone but me... or I get really mad!

Yep. Looks like I may have been told wrong.

Calico macaws have the same greens, and the same two tone facial feathers. So, I suspect you are right.

Calico Macaw, Hybrid, Cross between a Greenwing Macaw and a Military Macaw

I never really could keep the cross breeds straight in my mind, except the ruby's and the catalinas... cuz I had a ruby, and saw so many of the Catalinas.

Hybrid breeders come up with new names every day as they get into third generation cross on crosses...

Haha yeah they were a little confusing for me to get down, sorry I had to change what you thought! He was gorgeous
