Rio has slept in her sleep cage in my bedroom since almost day 1, I have had her now for almost 3 months and we have a routine, or we did. Ha! This week she doesn't seem to want to be in her sleep cage. On one occasion, we came home (it was after dark so she was on her cage in the living room) I went to remove her and she didn't want too. I said "step up" instead she grabbed hold of the shelf with her beak and held on. Hahahaha it was so funny. I literally had to remove the self with her attached to it just to get her out. Other times, say in the day time she doesn't like to stay in her cage and begs to come out.

So tonight same thing, but this time she was on her bungee all comfy it was about 8 pm. I went to remove her, she complied and walked in to the bedroom to put her to bed and she didn't want to go in her cage. I felt bad. Maybe it's too hot? I don't know what to make of it. So I set up her bungee in my bedroom and as I type this she is just sitting on it, all comfy at 9:18pm. The lights are out, the tv is on low and she is preening in the light of the tv.

So... What do you think? Am I creating a lil monster but letting her have her way? Is it too hot? It's been pretty hot 99 today. But my air has been on all day. I'm stumped.:09:

Who is training who here? Yes you will regret not being firm about bedtime because one day she will have to go in a cage and you will have more problems. Just like kids, you give an inch and they take a mile. She needs to know you are the boss and what you say goes.

It really does depend on your lifestyle and what you want. Merlee is right in that give an inch they will try and take a mile. That being said I don't have a set bed time for our fids, I keep a routine that when I decide or they ask to be put to bed, they get a cashew as they go in their cage,a few minutes of quiet sit and talk time and the blankie and lights out. So if you don't mind her sitting up and preening a little longer and adding an extra step to a routine, go for it.

Haha right now she is out like a light. Head tucked and everything - on her bungee. LOL

She really isn't into treats... She is stubborn... What I mean is once she is set in a way, treating her is impossible she will just throw it down.

Well last night I was finally able to get Rio in to her sleep cage with no problems. I hated to move her, but she had woken up so I took advantave of the opportunity. :)

I have a couple birds who love there sleep cage, then I have Spirit who hates it with a purple passion. So I leave it up to the bird. If I have had a late night and Spirit stayed up with me I let him just hang in his cage and chill the next day.

My years n gold keeps her own hours... Cause she knows at 9 it's bed time... And if we have her out she will go to her cage n climb inside n pull the door shut Lol.

sometimes if I am late putting my birds in their cage, 8pm or later, they get grumpy and don't want to go in.

I think they are already settling down for the night and don't want to be disturbed.

all my birds are in their cages no later than 7:30 and they are willing to go in, to bunker down for the night.

Merlin puts himself to bed when he gets sleepy. I find that disturbing an already sleepy bird just causes more disgruntledness than needed. So I'd say to either put Rio to bed earlier so she can nest down earlier without being disturbed, or let her settle in whichever cage she prefers.

Remember; most birds want to roost come darkness time, so if you keep missing Rio's "getting sleepy" mode, try watching her come dusk and see how she does!

....

When Porter isn't put to bed, and I'm gone?

I've had instances where well...

Normally I keep his cage open when I'm gone. He has his ladder to climb back up if he gets down and he normally gets the run of the main room.

Well I was gone maybe fifteen minutes and as soon as I turn on the light?

No Porter.

I go on a house wide bird hunt...

Takes me 2 hours and finally... I go back into the bedroom and begin hunting there.

After another half an hour I hear this sleepy little kissy noise. He's on the shelf NEXT to his sleep cage... because apparently he didn't know what to do to get the door open.

The little nut job apparently walked through the house and then flew as high as he could in the dark.

Suffice to say I keep his cage shut now when I leave.

Some birds are stubborn about bedtimes... in the funniest ways.

I mean... is funny now but he scared the life out of me with that stunt... meh.

Most of my birds live in the birdroom cage-free so I don't have to do anything but turn off the lights when the sun is halfway down and feed them dinner but I have two in the 'human living' areas and I never let them out in the evening, I just turn off the lights (6:30 pm this time of the year), feed them dinner and, once it's completely dark, cover their cages until before sunrise the following morning (we don't use the living room or the dining room in the evenings and nobody is allowed to talk or make any kind of noise downstairs when the birds are sleeping)
