Wondering if I can use this appliance or not.

So I'm looking at getting an Aroma 5 Quart Steamer from Target (Here's a link so you know what I'm talking about.) [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Aroma-5-Quart-Food-Steamer/dp/B007SPYQQE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1355992710&sr=8-4&keywords=aroma+steamer]Amazon.com: Aroma 5-Quart Food Steamer: Kitchen & Dining[/ame].

I know that some products have Teflon on their heating elements, and that will obviously kill my conure. Does anyone know if this product has Teflon on it, or do you own it and have operated it safely? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. My wife and I have a rice cooker that we have yet to use around the bird. Would that be safe either?

I think you will find it will be fine! I use a Steamer all the time and have never had any problems.

Honestly, I would contact the company who makes the product (the people at Target will no idea). The companies website will have contact info (email/phone) for inquiries, and simply explain you have birds and since Teflon can kill them, you need to know if it's been used anywhere in the product. We did this when we got a new toaster oven last year. The company responded quickly and the model we were looking at had Teflon components, but they were able to recommend a different model that didn't. More and more of these companies are becoming aware of the Teflon/parrot issue, and if you take the time to contact them, they'll take the time to tell you truthfully because they don't want a lawsuit on their hands over a dead bird.

I've contacted companies as well and they usually respond quickly. Make sure you ask them if they use any non stick components (not just teflon). Ask them if its made with PTFE.

Thanks everyone. I called and they're going to contact the manufacturer to double check. I don't think they took me very seriously at first because they very quickly told me it was safe. After I told them that if I used it would kill my parrot in a matter of minutes they decided to check into it further. I wasn't very happy about that, but at least I'll know for sure in a day or so.
