Been searching around online and can't seem to find a good answer on this one. We got ziggy about 2.5 months ago and I trimmed her wings the day we brought her home. Now that she is becoming much more socialized, I think I would like to try and leave her flighted and see how that goes. My question is, does anyone know how long it takes for their flight feathers to grow back? I am kind of kicking myself for trimming them now because it seems like the alex's don't molt as often as most birds. With the too's and tiels it seemed like I was wing trimming every few months but I haven't noticed any new growth on her wings after almost 3 months.

Most parrots molt about twice per year (although its different for each parrot - some are also affected by being inside most of the year). So you will have to wait until Ziggy molts those feathers and they grow back in. Don't worry, it won't be long until they are back but you may have to wait at least another three months or so.

Thanks! It's funny, I have always trimmed all of my birds, except my goffin, she trimmed her own wings for years and then finally let them grow out and she didn't know how to fly anyway lol. I just feel so bad now that I trimmed her wings. It definitely helped with our bonding and she is much more trusting now than when we got her, but she will stand on top of her cage and flap like crazy and then seems to get frustrated when nothing happens. :( She seems like she wants to fly to me but I guess I won't really know until she is able to try.

I guess I need to figure out when her last molt was, good thing I have her previous owner on my facebook. I'll have to ask her and see if she remembers.

Alex's molt their tail & flight feathers once a year so when your baby is around 12 months old Ziggy will start to drop old feathers & replace them with new ones.

wow, only once a year? She is actually a little over 2.5 years old now. She will be three in february :) Looks like she will have a little more flightless time than I had hoped, but that just gives me more time to work with her on other stuff before we can start doing recalls :)

Alex's breed in the winter months in OZ, normally after the breeding season they start their molt so that is about now.

It will probably depend on your climate but generally each year from Ziggy's hatch date she should start her molt. So by her hatch date in february she should start around then.

If i am wrong i am sure someone will correct me. LOL.
